Horse drawn plough, Ring of Kerry
Description: Given the low response to yesterdays wonderful shot we may need to repost it later as we are obviously in the holiday season with our contributors away on leave? Today sees a rare visit to the Tilbrook collection and to the Ring of Kerry. In colour no less. This lovely image of a horse-drawn plough with the sun streaming down on the furrowed ground would lighten the heart and raise our hopes! It is appropriate in its own way as today the 2017 Dublin Horse Show begins - with all the excitement, activity and of course horses galore. I hope they have a great show! Mrs Joseph Plunkett and Sir William Orpen
Description: Two significant figures from the 1916 era, Grace Plunkett (nee Gifford) and Sir William Orpen the artist. A very posed photograph - but what can we find out about it apart from what has been added to the catalogue?: "Grace Gifford Plunkett, holding a brush and artist's palette, and William Orpen, three-quarter length portrait, printed on postcard. Grace Gifford studied under the Irish artist William Orpen at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art between 1904 and 1907." Today's contributors link us primarily to the Wikipedia entries for Grace Gifford and William Orpen. Both artists from Dublin they are pictured perhaps around the time of William's 1907 portrait of his then student. Within a decade of that portrait, Irish and global events would take these two on different paths. Orpen became a prolific war artist and would capture the horrors of the Somme during 1916/1917. Grace became a caricature artist, and involved with Joseph Plunkett and the Rising during Easter 1916. Grace famously married Plunkett in Kilmainham Jail, just hours before his death... Nordic Chieftain under construction
Description: View of the OBO carrier 'Nordic Chieftain' under construction at the North Sands shipyard, Sunderland, February 1974 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/62742C). This set celebrates the achievements of the famous Sunderland shipbuilding firm Joseph L. Thompson & Sons. The company’s origins date back to 1846 when the firm was known as Robert Thompson & Sons. Robert Thompson senior died in 1860, leaving his second son Joseph Lowes Thompson in control. In 1870 the shipyard completed its last wooden vessel and was then adapted for iron shipbuilding. By 1880 the firm had expanded its operations over much of North Sands and in 1884 completed the construction of Manor Quay, which served as fitting out and repair facilities. For many years in the late nineteenth century the yard was the most productive in Sunderland and in 1894 had the fourth largest output of any shipyard in the world. The Depression affected the firm severely in the early 1930s and no vessels were launched from 1931 to 1934. However, during those years the company developed a hull design giving greater efficiency and economy in service. During the Second World War the prototype developed by Joseph L. Thompson & Sons proved so popular that it was used by the US Government as the basis of over 2,700 Liberty ships built at American shipyards between 1942 and 1945. After the War the North Sands shipyard went on to build many fine cargo ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers. Sadly the shipyard closed in 1979, although it briefly reopened in 1986 to construct the crane barge ITM Challenger. Coal staithes in the South Docks, Sunderland
Description: No. 1 and No. 2 coal belt conveyors in operation at the South Docks, Sunderland, c1929 (TWAM ref. 3768/8). Each of these was capable of shipping 750 tons of coal per hour. This set of images celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the establishment of the Port of Sunderland. The port authority was constituted in 1717 by Act of Parliament, which appointed the River Wear Commissioners to manage and improve the harbour and river. Since then the port has changed beyond recognition with the construction of piers, docks and quays and the dredging of the River Wear to make it wider and deeper. These developments were vital to the coal trade on which the region’s prosperity depended. The improvement of the river was also essential to the success of shipbuilding in Sunderland as well as allied industries such as marine engineering and ship repairing. These images are a reflection of Sunderland’s proud industrial history. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Wedding group : commissioned by Mr. Magner, Clonmel
Description: Hats, fur coats, fur stoles, wing collars, centre partings, cows-licks and so much more to show how fashions have changed since this shot was taken for Mr. Magner way back when! I'm not too sure I would want to take on the mother-in-law second from the right! Quick off the mark this morning, sharon.corbet gave us the text of the newspaper announcement of the wedding pictured:  MAGNER AND SMYTH—October 9, 1917, at Tramore, by the Rev. T. O'Brien, C.C., Passage-West,- William J. Magner, eldest son of John Magner, Clonmel, to Catherine (Kitty) Smyth, daughter of Mr. Edmund Smyth, Cattle Dealer, Clonmel The date, most of the subjects, and possible town/county locations were therefore identified. And our intrepid band of Flickroonies quickly filled-in some background. Including that the groom (William Magner) was almost certainly from the Clonmel family behind the Magners/Bulmers cider brand. And that the bride's family (Kitty Smyth) was involved in the cattle and newspaper trades in the same town.... Photographer: A. H. Casts a long shadow! An ESB tractor and wide load on the Naas Road.
Description: Perhaps the alternative title for this should be "wheeling by"? An image from the O'Dea collection of a giant piece of electrical equipment for the Electricity Supply Board (ESB). This was taken out on the Naas Road where it had apparently escaped the traffic congestion it had caused in Dublins city centre and was about to cause in towns such as Naas and Newbridge! The leading tractor, pulling the low-loader, is identified as a Scammell Transporter/Tractor. The precise spot on the Naas road is not (yet?) confirmed... Photographer: James P. Army band and people in a field
Description: Today we make a rare visit to the Hogan-Wilson collection, and while it may not be our clearest photograph ever, you can see enough detail to suggest that this is a military procession. Perhaps a funeral? I like that all the cattle to the right seem to be focused on the proceedings. What are the chances of discovering the location? The community pulled-out all the stops on this one, and propose at least two possible candidates on subject, date and location. Based on the 1924 date in the catalogue, and the possible mixed Garda and army cortege, guliolopez suggests that this could be the funeral of Garda John Murrin at Bruckless, County Donegal. (He had been shot at Carrick-on-Suir in May 1924, and succumbed to his wounds later in the year). While there is a reasonable overlap on date and subject matter, there is less certainty on the location... In a parallel thread, and based on the description and army presence, Rory_Sherlock suggests this might be the 1922 funeral of army Sgt Michael Roche at Doolin, County Clare. (He had been killed in a grenade explosion at Tralee in August 1922). While there is less overlap with the catalogue range, we've learned before that they are not always reliable, and there seems more overlap and certainty on landscape and location. There is perhaps a consensus building that we're looking at a Hogan capture of the latter army/Roche funeral..... Photographer: W. D. Hogan Collection: Hogan Wilson Collection Date: Catalogue suggests c.1924. Though possibly 1922. Description: View along Blackett Street, Newcastle upon Tyne from near Grey's Monument, May 1960 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/24387C). Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century.
