Nordic Chieftain under construction
Description: View of the OBO carrier 'Nordic Chieftain' under construction at the North Sands shipyard, Sunderland, February 1974 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/62742C). This set celebrates the achievements of the famous Sunderland shipbuilding firm Joseph L. Thompson & Sons. The company’s origins date back to 1846 when the firm was known as Robert Thompson & Sons. Robert Thompson senior died in 1860, leaving his second son Joseph Lowes Thompson in control. In 1870 the shipyard completed its last wooden vessel and was then adapted for iron shipbuilding. By 1880 the firm had expanded its operations over much of North Sands and in 1884 completed the construction of Manor Quay, which served as fitting out and repair facilities. For many years in the late nineteenth century the yard was the most productive in Sunderland and in 1894 had the fourth largest output of any shipyard in the world. The Depression affected the firm severely in the early 1930s and no vessels were launched from 1931 to 1934. However, during those years the company developed a hull design giving greater efficiency and economy in service. During the Second World War the prototype developed by Joseph L. Thompson & Sons proved so popular that it was used by the US Government as the basis of over 2,700 Liberty ships built at American shipyards between 1942 and 1945. After the War the North Sands shipyard went on to build many fine cargo ships, oil tankers and bulk carriers. Sadly the shipyard closed in 1979, although it briefly reopened in 1986 to construct the crane barge ITM Challenger. Wedding group : commissioned by Mr. Magner, Clonmel
Description: Hats, fur coats, fur stoles, wing collars, centre partings, cows-licks and so much more to show how fashions have changed since this shot was taken for Mr. Magner way back when! I'm not too sure I would want to take on the mother-in-law second from the right! Quick off the mark this morning, sharon.corbet gave us the text of the newspaper announcement of the wedding pictured:  MAGNER AND SMYTH—October 9, 1917, at Tramore, by the Rev. T. O'Brien, C.C., Passage-West,- William J. Magner, eldest son of John Magner, Clonmel, to Catherine (Kitty) Smyth, daughter of Mr. Edmund Smyth, Cattle Dealer, Clonmel The date, most of the subjects, and possible town/county locations were therefore identified. And our intrepid band of Flickroonies quickly filled-in some background. Including that the groom (William Magner) was almost certainly from the Clonmel family behind the Magners/Bulmers cider brand. And that the bride's family (Kitty Smyth) was involved in the cattle and newspaper trades in the same town.... Photographer: A. H. Thomas Ashe, half-length portrait
Description: A fine Keogh portrait of the man who was probably, militarily at least, the most successful and least celebrated 1916 leader! One thing we can be sure of is that the outer end of the date range on this will be changed! With thanks to today's contributors, it seems that this portrait of Thomas Ashe (dating to c.1914-1917 and part of a series published by Keogh brothers about the 1916 leadership) was widely used. There are examples of buttons and memorial plaques based upon it in the comment thread. The image also appears on the entry for Ashe (and his burial) at the Glasnevin Trust website. This entry describes that he died in 1917, from pnumonia and other complications (arising from his treatment, including forible feeding, while imprisoned at Mountjoy).... Photographer: Brendan Keogh Collection: Keogh Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1914-1923. But certainly before 1917 (date of death). Preparing for the launch of two Wear hopper barges
Description: View of Wear Hopper 3 and Wear Hopper 4 being prepared for launch at the shipyard of John Crown & Sons Ltd, Sunderland, 5 October 1959 (TWAM ref. DS.CR/4/PH/1/246/2/1). These hopper barges played a vital role on the River Wear, taking dredged material out to sea. This set of images celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the establishment of the Port of Sunderland. The port authority was constituted in 1717 by Act of Parliament, which appointed the River Wear Commissioners to manage and improve the harbour and river. Since then the port has changed beyond recognition with the construction of piers, docks and quays and the dredging of the River Wear to make it wider and deeper. These developments were vital to the coal trade on which the region’s prosperity depended. The improvement of the river was also essential to the success of shipbuilding in Sunderland as well as allied industries such as marine engineering and ship repairing. These images are a reflection of Sunderland’s proud industrial history. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Army band and people in a field
Description: Today we make a rare visit to the Hogan-Wilson collection, and while it may not be our clearest photograph ever, you can see enough detail to suggest that this is a military procession. Perhaps a funeral? I like that all the cattle to the right seem to be focused on the proceedings. What are the chances of discovering the location? The community pulled-out all the stops on this one, and propose at least two possible candidates on subject, date and location. Based on the 1924 date in the catalogue, and the possible mixed Garda and army cortege, guliolopez suggests that this could be the funeral of Garda John Murrin at Bruckless, County Donegal. (He had been shot at Carrick-on-Suir in May 1924, and succumbed to his wounds later in the year). While there is a reasonable overlap on date and subject matter, there is less certainty on the location... In a parallel thread, and based on the description and army presence, Rory_Sherlock suggests this might be the 1922 funeral of army Sgt Michael Roche at Doolin, County Clare. (He had been killed in a grenade explosion at Tralee in August 1922). While there is less overlap with the catalogue range, we've learned before that they are not always reliable, and there seems more overlap and certainty on landscape and location. There is perhaps a consensus building that we're looking at a Hogan capture of the latter army/Roche funeral..... Photographer: W. D. Hogan Collection: Hogan Wilson Collection Date: Catalogue suggests c.1924. Though possibly 1922. Discharging chromite at the Corporation Quay, Sunderland
Description: Discharging East African chromite from an ocean liner at the Corporation Quay, Sunderland, July 1949 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/3177H). Blackett Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1960
Description: View along Blackett Street, Newcastle upon Tyne from near Grey's Monument, May 1960 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/24387C). Tyne & Wear Archives presents a series of images taken by the Newcastle-based photographers Turners Ltd. The firm had an excellent reputation and was regularly commissioned by local businesses to take photographs of their products and their premises. Turners also sometimes took aerial and street views on their own account and many of those images have survived, giving us a fascinating glimpse of life in the North East of England in the second half of the Twentieth Century.
