Beginning with the Alaskan peninsula, which juts outbetween the Pacific and Bering Sea for nearly 500 miles, the volcanic ridge fails to reach the surface continuously, but appears at frequent intervals, for a thousand milesfurther, in what is known as the Aleutian chain ofislands. It may not be generally appreciated that Nome and theseal islands are farther west than Honolulu, that Attu, the most western of the Aleutian chain, is not as far fromthe Asiatic coast as is St. Louis from Minneapolis and thatit is nearer from Attu to the Kommander Islands, just offthe coast of Kamschatka, than from Minneapolis to Mil-waukee. This Alaskan peninsula and the Aleutian Islands,if stretched out across our continent, would reach fromMinneapolis to Boston. The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. A little neophyte, the only one St.Stephens now possesses, a boy too poor even to buy thegarb of his class, is appointed by the Abbot to minister tous in the name of the church ; but I fear that we were moreimpressed by the size of his red shoes than by the fact thathe stood in them as the representative of the Orthodox faith. On the wall hung pictures of the King and Queen ; thewindow commanded a view full of variety and wonder. Be-low is the village of Kalabaka, beyond it fields and vineyards, formerly belonging to the monks ; then comes a band ofsilver, the river familiar to the readers of ancient history asthe Peneus — to-day the Salamvrias. It is the same stream that after traversing the Thes- salian plains makes its escape thence to the sea through ■^sSl. the beautiful Vale of Tempe. Beyond the river rise the Text Appearing After Image: IN THE COIK 1 N AKU 290 THE WONDERS OF THESSALY Pindus Mountains, the hif^hest peak almost eight thousandieet above the sea. Beyond this range of mountains Hes theprovince of Epirus, the inhabitants of which are Greeks butwhich is ruled by the Turkish sultan. Nearer on our right are grouped the Meteora columns, crowned by the neighboring monasteries, in situations farmore startling than that of the one that has so hospitablyreceived us. To reach the nearest of them, the HagiaTriada, or Holy Trinity, seems at first a very simple matter.A path apparently leads from the bridge of St. Stephensdirectly to the other holy habitat. We can easily trace theroute we are to follow — a simple promenade will bring usin three or four minutes to our destination. We forget thescenic surprises and deceptions of the day before. The con-jurer who controls this wonderland is not asleep ; he is pre-paring a more marvelous feat of magic than any he has yetperformed ; and he intends to enhance the effect of Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.

Since that time therehas been a break in traffic at Pilrig Street, the boundary be-tween Edinburgh and Leith, and passengers have had to changefrom the cable into the horse cars. After the Leith Corporation had purchased by agreement thehorse tramways in Leith, it approached the Edinburgh Cor-poration with a proposal to equip electrically the cable linefrom the boundary up to Princess Street to obviate the breakin traffic at the boundary and so get the advantage of throughrunning. This would have been a very great advantage to theinhabitants of both Edinburgh and Leith, as well as to therailway systems themselves, as it would render the half mileon each side of the boundary productive, which is not the casewhen passengers have to change cars.
