Thepeople, too, are very frugal, and even in towns, though rents be high, all other necessaries aremoderate in price. The standard of life is nothigh, and the people are contented with a styleof living which would be indignantly rejected byEnglish labourers. The artisans are not good workmen, but plod onfairly well, and, with the exception of festas, re-quire few holidays. They look upon this as agrievance, however much they may be assuredthat it makes no difference in their wages. However, even duringthis period, the technic used in general has been most inefficient. When all cases are re-ferred for post-operative treatment we will be in a much better position to estimate itsvalue. When such cases are referred for post-operative treatment, the Roentgenologistshould be informed as to whether metastases in the axillary and supra-clavicular regionswere or were not found at operation, for we believe that in the cases in which there isno metastasis, the amount of treatment needed will be very much less, and the periodduring which the treatment will have to be continued after operation will be likewisevery much diminished. The prognosis following operation without Roentgen treat-ment has been discussed in previous chapters of this book, and therefore need not berepeated here. We believe, however, that the end results can-be improved 25 per cent. All surgeons recognize thedanger of recurrence, and since the foregoing cases, which have been studied byDr. Deaver and myself over a considerable period of time, show that even extensive, recurrent and metastatic disease may yield to the action of the rays, there can bfe nodoubt as to the influence of the Roentgen rays upon the malignant tissue. If recur-rence, the positive evidence of malignant disease, can be made to disappear, then it issurely reasonable to presume that if this disease be treated in its incipient recurrence,or when only a few cells have been left behind or transplanted, that if this treatmentbe used in time, the chances of recurrence and of the subsequent development of thedisease must be very much less. The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. As weperceive the representations of external forms in a right angle, drawing in a squareis a natural operation. If perpendicular and horizontal lines are drawn at equal distances, and extendedequally in both directions, a net work of equal scjuares will be formed. The form of the triangle results necessarily from that of the square, as the triangleis one half of the square, each having the same base and perpendicular. Drawing exercises are commenced very early—as soon as a child enters the KinderGarten—as none are too young to make strokes in an engraved line. In order that mistakes may be easily corrected, and imperfect figures easily erased, the Slate is used at the commencement, afterwards the Drawing Book should be used :and that the slates may be in accordance with the principles propounded, they are en-graved in the form of a net of equal squares,—the most convenient size of Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.

Parasitic Plants.—The Mistletoe. The European Mistletoe, {Viseum fi/mescene,) is familiar to us from iho frequency with whichit is mentioned iuliterature, and the legends andsuperstitions connected with it. With the Dru-ids it was, when collected at the proper time, acharm against diseases; to this day it is hungup among Christmas decorations, and kissingunder it is a custom, though we are not inform-ed that it is one confined to that particular timeand place. Our American Mistletoe, though itdiffers from the European in some points in thestructure of the flowers, bears a general resem-blance to that, and would no doubt proveequally efficacious in the particulars above men-tioned. The botanical name of our plant isPKoradendron flanescem. The generic name isfrom the Greek for thief and tree, and has refer-ence to the habits of the plant, which lives bystealing its food. Our plant is found from NewJersey and Illinois to Tex Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.
