Madame (Ada) Senyah, trapeze artist, c.1865
Description: Madame (Ada) Senyah, trapeze artist, c.1865, unknown, from carte-de-visite, State Library of New South Wales, PXA 362 collection.sl.nsw.gov.au/record/93QVj571 Madame (Ada) Senyah was one of the more famous trapeze artists from the mid nineteenth century. In a feature common with many in the business Madame Senyah did not use her real name. Many adopted Italian and foreign sounding names but in this instance, Ada used the device of spelling her real name Haynes backward. Following the lead of Jean Price who introduced long leaps using a trapeze bar Madame Senyah is often credited with being the first woman aerial flyer. She appeared with her husband, Samuel, who hung from a trapeze bar by his feet and caught his wife as she swung towards him after losing her hold of the stirrups.

Description: Vestibule of Victory cinema, George Street, Sydney, with "Springtime" showing, 30.8.1946, taken for Mr Attwater by Sam Hood, State Library of New South Wales, archival.sl.nsw.gov.au/Details/archive/110007425 Notes from Lost Sydney - John Gleeson In 1939, The Empress was demolished and replaced by The Victory Theatre. An Art Deco building, it was designed by Crick and Furse, the firm responsible for designing many of the Art Deco theatres around Sydney. As The Victory, the cinema screened mostly action movies. This changed when renamed The Rapallo, though neither this nor objections from The National Trust prevented the demolition of the theatre in 1984.

Description: The Clonbrocks were out foreign again and took this interesting image while there. At first sight I thought the train was a case of a "Pushme Pullyou" as described in Dr. Doolittle but I was mistaken. The catalogue title makes note of the pump to the right and there is just so much to see in this lovely shot. Wouldn't it be lovely to see it colourised? The Rocks at the top of the hill.
Description: A gentleman in Tweed jacket and breeches admires a Dolmen or Cromlech at the top of a very stony hill. This image from the Clonbrock Collection has a date, but no location. Somehow rural scenes in those days seemed more rugged with rocks more exposed, and I suspect that this scene is more overgrown today?
