The Honourable Iggy out walking
Description: The Honourable, Sir Ignatius O'Brien, Lord Chancellor of Ireland by Mr. Poole. It looks, to me, like a reproduction from another shot by Mr. Poole unless of course he was captured emerging from a fog? Have you ever wondered about these grand titles? Were they real roles with powers and responsibilities or were they just jobs for the boys? And Ignatius himself, who was he and what can we find out about him? Photographer: A. H. Ladies' Reliability Trials, Australia, 1936
Description: Ladies' Reliability Trials, Australia, 1 June 1936, State Library of New South Wales, ON 388/Box 063/Item 239https://collection.sl.nsw.gov.au/record/93QX3qN1 The ‘Reliability Trials’ were car races run on largely unmade roads. The word reliability referred to the fact the cars were unmodified showroom models and breakdowns, rollovers, fires and other mishaps were not uncommon. From the early years of the trials there was a strong female interest, and in 1905, Florence Thomson was the first female driver to enter the Dunlop Reliability Motor Contest. This started in Sydney and finished in Melbourne and Florence was one of only 17 to finish the race. By 1936 there were enough women interested in testing their metal that a separate ‘Ladies Reliability Trial’ had been set up.

Madame (Ada) Senyah, trapeze artist, c.1865
Description: Madame (Ada) Senyah, trapeze artist, c.1865, unknown, from carte-de-visite, State Library of New South Wales, PXA 362 collection.sl.nsw.gov.au/record/93QVj571 Madame (Ada) Senyah was one of the more famous trapeze artists from the mid nineteenth century. In a feature common with many in the business Madame Senyah did not use her real name. Many adopted Italian and foreign sounding names but in this instance, Ada used the device of spelling her real name Haynes backward. Following the lead of Jean Price who introduced long leaps using a trapeze bar Madame Senyah is often credited with being the first woman aerial flyer. She appeared with her husband, Samuel, who hung from a trapeze bar by his feet and caught his wife as she swung towards him after losing her hold of the stirrups.
