The specimen shownin Fig. 145 was foundin the Thames, at Lon-don, and is now in ther>ritish Museum. It is moreprobably the head of awar mace than thatof an ordinary hammer.A somewhat similarhammer, of porphyry, Fig. 145.-Tliames, London. i is in the Museum of the Deutsche Gesellschaft at Leipzig. It has at one end a much-roundedpoint, and at the other is nearly straight across, though rounded in theother direction. It would appear to be a weapon rather than a tool. Itis formed of greenstone, and was found near Scarborough, and is now inthe Museum at the Leeds Philosophical Hall. A beautifully finished hammer-head, cross-paned at both ends, andwith a parallel poHshed shaft-hole, is shown in Fig. 147. It is of palemottled-green gneissose rock, Avith veins of transparent pale green, likejade, and was found in a barrow in Shetland. It is preserved in theAntiquarian Museum at Edinburgh, where is also another of the sameform, but broader and much more weathered, which was found atScarpiegarth,* also in Shetland. The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. Happy Hatoriffic(ish) weekend to you all.
Description: A group of three, two ladies with fine hats on board. And a gentleman sitting down while the ladies stand? Miss Nolan of Brownswood, Carrick-on-Suir was the lady who made the commission, but is she in the image, and what was the occasion? +++ UPDATE +++ Looks as if this one will have to simmer on the back burner for a while. No Brownswood Nolans in either the 1901 or 1911 censuseses. And Evening Mary could find nothing in any online newspapers. We shall sit back (if we can get a chance to sit down with these young feller-me-lads hogging all the seating) and await developments... Photographer: A. H. And the plot thickens...
Description: Mr. Seumas O’Neill of Cashel, German Plot prisoner of Durham Gaol. A fine, handsome young man in semi-military garb with a Nationalist badge on his lapel, locked up in a British gaol. Who was Seumas, and what was the German Plot? What happened to him thereafter? Yesterday’s virtual trip through Germany, Switzerland, and Austria was most entertaining, and a welcome relief from the trials and tribulations of the pandemic, whose name must not be mentioned! Description: Thomas MacDonagh and friend in a really pleasant, casual portrait. One thing we can be sure of is that this was taken no later than 1916, and as MacDonagh is mature, probably some time after 1900. Who is his friend, and what can we find out about this photograph? Comrades in arms sharing the pain.
Description: “Injured soldier being cared for by the Red Cross on the South Western Front during the Irish Civil War”! A long title for a photograph that tells a tale from 98 years ago somewhere in Munster. The wounded man appears to be in considerable pain and is being held and comforted by his friend and colleague. Two things that stand out for me are the makeshift Red Cross armbands on the two medics, and the old-fashioned kit bag seemingly holding their first aid supplies! Photographer: W. D. We found it, as usual with the plants ofthis genus, growing along the borders of small, clear brooks, near the confluence of the Wahlamet, but seldom, if ever, onthe banks of the larger streams which are subject to inundation. In our progress to the West, we first observed this tree on theborders of the rivers Boisee and Brulee, which pass into theShoshonee not far from Walla-Walla, and at intervals it con-tinues more or less common to Point Chinhook, near the shoresof the Pacific. The twigs are smooth and of a brown color, and the youngbuds of every kind resinous, as well as the upper surface of theyounger leaves; beneath, the leaves are more or less pubescent, particularly along the veins, and paler and often somewhatferruginous. Technically, thenthe Belgian is named Hare by courtesy, and is a rabbit infact, the English wild Hare being the pattern that hasstood for fanciers of that country as an ideal towardwhich they have directed their breeding since its intro-duction from Belgium. With all this idealism, however, the Belgian will never be an exact likeness of its proto-type, for without the admixture of blood from the latterthere can be no more than a similarity. Belgian breeders claim, that what is now the up-bredBelgian Hare was originated by them from a cross of thewild Hare indigenous to that country, and their commonrabbit. Naturalists describe the wild Hare of Belgium bya fur of dark reddish color, with white belly, and weighsfrom 6 to 9 pounds. In its original type the Belgian Hare, so named, wasintroduced into England sometime about 18.56 to 1860.It came with the name Leporine. No immediate progresswas made by English fanciers, and it was not until somefifteen years later that attention was directed towarda specific type. In the last twenty years, however, muchadvancement was accomplished, largely accentuated bythe interest aroused throughout this country. To better appreciate the idealism toward which Bel-gian fanciers breed with the wild Hare as prototype, itwill not be in apropos to remark Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.
