Promptly at ten-thirty Tim-mie, right face, marched down the long path, his everystep accompanied by loud shouts of left,—left,—left, right, left. From many of the windows of Hope and Universitylarge sonorous horns kept time with his steps; apparentlythe whole college was in it. The effect was electric, as ifevery time he put his foot down he touched a buttonwhich produced a mighty roar. Prepared for a storm, weentered and settled away down in our chairs until the pro-fessor should break the ominous calm. He said, Gentle-men ! mark you, gentlemen ! I was so unfortunate asto lose my temper yesterday and wish to make a com-plete apology for the manner and matter of my remarksto you. I see the joke, and hope for your future goodwishes. We recognized his manly spirit, and pleasantrelations always existed thereafter. Robert P. Brown, i8yi. The other two build-ings, Rhode Island Hall and the chemical laboratory, were too far away to feel the shock. We confronted a sophomore class of self-acknowledgedimportance. They boasted that they were the biggestclass that ever entered Brown and felt somewhat biggerthan even their number warranted. Some of them werebearded like the pard, some were heroes of the Civil War,some of them were well-known ball players, whom we hadrepeatedly beaten when we were only high-school boys.An incident in their classroom will give a fair sample oftheir intellectual perception. Text Appearing Before Image: the rock. Low places are spanned bysubstantial trestle work. The gauge of the road is 4 feet 7^ inches, and it is provided with the two ordinary rails and also the cen-tral rack rail, which is really like an iron ladder, the sides being otangle iron and the cross-pieces of round iron \\ inches in diameterand 4 inches apart. Into these plays the central cog-wheel on thelocomotive, which thus climbs this iron ladder with entire safety.Very complete arrangements are made to control the descent of thetrain in case of accident to the machinery. The locomotive is alwaysbelow the train, and pushes it up the mountain. Many thousandsof passengers have been transported every year without accident. The rack railroad ascending the Righi, in Switzerland, wascopied after the Mount Washing-ton line. Some improvements inthe construction of the rack railand attachments have been intro-duced upon mountain roads inGermany, and this system seemsvery advantageous for use in ex-ceptionally steep locations. Text Appearing After Image: When a line of railway meetsin its course a barrier of rock, it isoften best to cut directly through. If the grade is not too far belowthe surface of the rock, the cut ismade like a oreat trench with thesides as steep as the nature of a senes of Tunnels. the material will allow. Very deep cuts are, however, not desirable. The rains bring down upontheir slopes the softer material from above, and the frost detachespieces of rock which, falling, may result in serious accidents totrains. Snow lodges in these deep cuts, at times entirely stop-ping traffic, as in the blizzard near New York, in March, 1888.A tunnel, therefore, while perhaps greater in first cost than a mod-erately deep cut, is really often the more economical expedient. 6o FEATS OF RAILWAY ENGINEERING. The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. Happy Hatoriffic(ish) weekend to you all.
Description: A group of three, two ladies with fine hats on board. And a gentleman sitting down while the ladies stand? Miss Nolan of Brownswood, Carrick-on-Suir was the lady who made the commission, but is she in the image, and what was the occasion? +++ UPDATE +++ Looks as if this one will have to simmer on the back burner for a while. No Brownswood Nolans in either the 1901 or 1911 censuseses. And Evening Mary could find nothing in any online newspapers. We shall sit back (if we can get a chance to sit down with these young feller-me-lads hogging all the seating) and await developments... Photographer: A. H.
