The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. Happy Hatoriffic(ish) weekend to you all.
Description: A group of three, two ladies with fine hats on board. And a gentleman sitting down while the ladies stand? Miss Nolan of Brownswood, Carrick-on-Suir was the lady who made the commission, but is she in the image, and what was the occasion? +++ UPDATE +++ Looks as if this one will have to simmer on the back burner for a while. No Brownswood Nolans in either the 1901 or 1911 censuseses. And Evening Mary could find nothing in any online newspapers. We shall sit back (if we can get a chance to sit down with these young feller-me-lads hogging all the seating) and await developments... Photographer: A. H. In doing this, care should be takento leave them sufficiently deep to enable matching the bevel of theshoe nicely without cutting away or lowering the wall too much.No horn should be left projecting inside, as it would form a wallagainst the inner edge of the shoe, and prevent the heels from.spreading. Of course no nails should be driven back in the quar-ters. As before explained, the f IOg should gradually be given con-tact with the ground. As the quarters are opened, the shoe canbe taken ofl, made larger, and reset, until the foot is reasonablyexpanded, when a level bearing surface may again be used. But for anything like a bad condition of contraction, more di-rect and positiv(i treatment will be necessary. For example, ifthe foot is badly contracted, the frog small, and sole forced upwardacutely, the whole iutei-nal structure, in fact, locked and tied, as Text Appearing After Image: Fig. 507.—Bearing surface of convex shoe. SHOEING. 679 it were, by the severe compression of the wall, three conditionsare necessary: First, complete elasticity of quarters and sole; sec-ond, power to open quarters so as to relieve pressure, and allowthe sole to settle back to its natural position ; thii-d, gradual frogpressure so as to restore a healthy condition of ciiculation andstrength of parts. The first important step in the treatment is tothoroughly soften the feet. The sim-plest way of doing this in the stablesis by tying two or three thicknesses ofblanket around the feet and keepingthem wet for about twenty-four hours ;or better, fill two small bags with bran, put a foot into each, and tie a stringloosely around the to]) of the bag andleer above the fetlock. Put each footinto a bucket of water, and afterwardspour on water to keep wet ; or thehorse can be made to stand in mud tillthe feet are soft. There is usually a large accumula-tion of horn, especially at the heel, allof Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.

One was a woman, named Mrs. Ruffner, for whom he worked as ahousehold servant. Mrs. Ruffner had the repu-tation of being *^strict. That is, she wantedher floors swept clean, under the tables andbureaus as well as in the middle of the room.Booker was a thorough worker, and Mrs. Ruff-ner liked him and encouraged him. While he was with Mrs. Ruffner, he heardabout Hampton Institute. This was a schoolfor negro and Indian boys at Hampton, Vir-ginia. It gave an all-around education—notonly in books but trades, such as carpentry, printing, and farming for boys, and householdwork and sewing for girls. Booker began tosave his money to go to this school, which wasseveral hundred miles away. At last, when hethought he had enough money, he set out on thejourney. He traveled over the mountains in astage-coach, and the first night they stopped ata little mountain town. Booker went to the Text Appearing After Image: 98 STORIES OF BROTHERHOOD hotel with the other passengers, but could notget a room. The poor boy had not even yetrealized what it meant to be black. There wasno place in that town for a negro to sleep, andall that night Booker walked about outdoors tokeep warm. But the next day he kept on hisjourney, and at last, after many days of travel-ing, reached Hampton. Here he found goodfriends, among them the head of the school, thegreat General Armstrong. He was the bestfriend Booker Washington ever had. From himhe learned to trust in God and give himself, likeJesus, in service to his fellow men. The chiefword at Hampton was service. When Booker graduated from Hampton, hisgreat ambition was to help his own people, thenegroes of the South. He remembered the littleboy who went to school in West Virginia, whosehopes and ambitions were discouraged becausehe was black. He knew there were thousandsof black boys and girls who could make some-thing of themselves in the world, if only someone would g Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.

In he-morrhages, it acts as a most efficient styptic, and is successfully appliedin solution, in the proportion of about six drops to the ounce of water. The size and shape of the granuleshave been made special subjects of investiga-tion by pharmacologists, and their study hasbeen found to aid in the recognition of thedifferent varieties of fecula, and in detectingadulterations. The envelop of these starchgranules is insoluble in cold water, but is rup-tured by the application of heat, so that thecontents, are exposed and become dissolved.Hence starch is said to be insoluble in cold, but Starch granules as seen under Soluble VO. hot Water. The printsafter washing are placed on the ferrotype plates and runthrough a suitable wringer, such as is used for laundry work, for removing the surplus wash water, and at the same timebringing the prints in intimate contact with the polished sur-face. The problem of drying a large number of prints in a 307 short time was solved by the New York Herald photographicsyndicate in the following manner: A closet was constructed which measured 14 inches deep,48 wide and 34 high. It was lined with galvanized sheetiron. The illustration (Fig. i) will give a better idea how itwas made than pages of explanation. The racks and shelveswere also made of this material. In the rear of the closetwill be noticed a bank of incandescent electric lamps. Theselamps are to warm the air which is caused to circulate bythe fan motor. The scheme is to blow warm air over theprints, causing them to dry rapidly if the doors are kept closed. Text Appearing After Image: FOUNTAINS ABBEY. FREDERIC G. P. Arrangements hadbeen made for a big excursion at some future date, but in the meantime poorcrops and partial failures followed, culminating in the drought period of1894-5, which drove away half the population of the state, and in which Calla-way dwindled down from a hustling town of 000 people to a dead village of alittle over 200.
