Dr. Holmes had a way at thetable of talking of you actors, you gentlemen of thestage, until I saw Longfellow was quite disturbed atthe unsympathetic unmannerliness of it, in appearance, and tried to talk more than ever in a different strain. After I left the table, which I did because I thoughtthey might like to smoke, Jamie sent for Parsonsspoems and read them some of the finest. Of course thetalk was wittier and quicker as the time came to sep-arate, but I cannot report upon it. The impression thetwo actors left upon me, however, was rather that ofmen who enjoyed coming up to the surface to breathe anatural air seldom vouchsafed to them than of mensparring with their wits — they are affectionate, gentle, subdued gentlemen and a noble contrast to the self-opinionated ignorance which we often meet in society.Dr. Holmes was, however, the wit of the occasion, as healways is, and everybody richly enjoyed his sallies. I must confess to dislike such playswhere your feelings are wrought to the highest pitchfor nothing. The name of Fechter is familiar to the middle-agedthrough the memory of fathers, to the young throughthat of grandfathers. Readers of these pages will recallthat Dickens, soon after reaching America in 1867,spoke of him in terms which caused Mrs. Fields tolook forward with confidence to a new friendship. Hiscoming to America was specifically heralded by an ar-ticle, On Mr. Fechters Acting, contributed by Dick-ens to the Atlantic for August, 1869. Of this he says: This gigantic tiki stands, together withseveral others, near the tomb of the daughter of Te Whero-Whero,and, like the monument which it seems to guard, is one of the finestexamples of native carving to be found in New Zealand. The preciseobject of the tiki is uncertain, but the protruding tongue of the upperfigure seems to show that it is one of the numerous defiant statueswhich abound in the islands. An Art Deco building, it was designed by Crick and Furse, the firm responsible for designing many of the Art Deco theatres around Sydney. As The Victory, the cinema screened mostly action movies. This changed when renamed The Rapallo, though neither this nor objections from The National Trust prevented the demolition of the theatre in 1984.

The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. And the plot thickens...
Description: Mr. Seumas O’Neill of Cashel, German Plot prisoner of Durham Gaol. A fine, handsome young man in semi-military garb with a Nationalist badge on his lapel, locked up in a British gaol. Who was Seumas, and what was the German Plot? What happened to him thereafter? Yesterday’s virtual trip through Germany, Switzerland, and Austria was most entertaining, and a welcome relief from the trials and tribulations of the pandemic, whose name must not be mentioned! Description: Thomas MacDonagh and friend in a really pleasant, casual portrait. One thing we can be sure of is that this was taken no later than 1916, and as MacDonagh is mature, probably some time after 1900. Who is his friend, and what can we find out about this photograph? Comrades in arms sharing the pain.
Description: “Injured soldier being cared for by the Red Cross on the South Western Front during the Irish Civil War”! A long title for a photograph that tells a tale from 98 years ago somewhere in Munster. The wounded man appears to be in considerable pain and is being held and comforted by his friend and colleague. Two things that stand out for me are the makeshift Red Cross armbands on the two medics, and the old-fashioned kit bag seemingly holding their first aid supplies! Photographer: W. D. A fine set of fetlocks!
Description: Captain W.J. Baird, Aide de Camp to the Lord Lieutenant sits astride a really fine looking horse in this carefully posed image from the Poole Collection. Now we know the name of the soldier so now we want to know is the name of the horse??? +++ UPDATE +++ Thanks everyone, for confirmation that Captain James Baird was aide-de-camp to Lord Wimborne, Lord Lieutentant in Ireland, and that he was in that post in 1917 (newspaper reports). O Mac suggests Busoni as the horse's name, but we'd need some hard evidence. We're a tough crowd. Oh, and we always love to see John Spooner waxing lyrical about movable boudoirs! Photographer: A. H. Gentle manners and tender love, morning and evening familyworship, kindly counsel, warning and instruction, tidiness and thrift, intelligence and education, and over all and through all the spirit ofhumble, joyful Christian sincerity. Next to the actual salvation of in-dividual souls, these are the results that most rejoice the heart of thetrue missionary, and testify to the value of his work. 2 Bishop Caldwell, of India, once remarked, after a tour in Tinne-velly: In passing from village to village you can tell without askinga question which village is Christian and which is heathen. She remarked: MyChristian sons home is heaven, and I would never wish to see a betterheaven; my fakir sons home is a dunghill, yea, hell itself. ^ A missionary remarks: Christianity h Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.

If the Minister, usually a very stern and august person-age, approved, the new professor was permitted to teach asPrivate Docent without remuneration. When a chairbecame vacant at any one of the five State Universities, allthe Private Docents lecturing on the subject taught by theperson who had occupied the vacant chair were discussedand compared by the faculty of that University. The professor chosen had to appear before the Senate andthe Minister for a second time. If they approved him then, his application was submitted to the President of the Repub-lic for final action. Certainly the goodsense of the young men of this campuswill prevent such tournaments. Studentsshould have a higher aim in life thanto emulate the traveling ball players ofthe country. Chapel attendance, we found out, wascompulsory, but the students decided itwas not sinful to study on Sunday be-cause, after all—If the Lord justifiesman for helping the ass from the pit onthe Sabbath day, much more will Hejustify the ass for trying to help himselfout.
