If they were s<|uare, the youngbee would have a much more uncomfortablecradle in which to grow up, and it wouldtake a much greater space to accommodatea given number of bees. This last would,of itself, be a fatal objection ; for to havethe greatest benefit of the accumulated ani-mal heat of the brood, they must be closelypacked together. This is not only the casewith the unhatched bees, but with the beesof a whole colony in winter ; when each beeis snugly ensconced in a cell, they occupyless room than they could by any other ar-rangement. Text Appearing After Image: B A WHY THE CELLS OF THE HONEY-COMB AREMADE 6-SIDED. If the cells were round, they could begrouped together much in the same way as HONEY-COMB. 178 HONEY-COMB. they are now ; viz., one in the center, and 6all around it, equally distant from the cen-tral one, and from each other, like the cut,in the tigure A ; but even then, the ch-cleswill leave much waste room in the corners, that the bees would have to till with wax. At B, we see the cells are nearly as com-fortable for the yoinig bee as a round onewould be—of course, I mean from our pointof view, for it is quite likely that the beesknow just what they need a great deal bet-ter than we do—and, at the same time, they come together in such a way that nospace is left to be tilled up at all. The bees, therefore, can make the walls of their cellsso thin that they are little more than a silkycovering, as it wei^e, that separates each onefrom its neighbor. It must also be remem-bered that a bee, when in his cell, is squeezedup, if we may Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.

The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. What can we find out about them? +++ UPDATE +++ We found out ridiculously fabulous information about them, and much of the heavy lifting was done by Bernard Healy! Meet engine driver Richard Siggins and Emily Cozens, both of 28 The Glen, Waterford. They got married in the Cathedral in Waterford on 23 October 1944, and their witnesses were William Siggins and Mary Josephine Cozens. The presiding priest was Fr. John O'Connor, so just the stray smiling priest yet to be identified... A fine set of fetlocks!
Description: Captain W.J. Baird, Aide de Camp to the Lord Lieutenant sits astride a really fine looking horse in this carefully posed image from the Poole Collection. Now we know the name of the soldier so now we want to know is the name of the horse??? +++ UPDATE +++ Thanks everyone, for confirmation that Captain James Baird was aide-de-camp to Lord Wimborne, Lord Lieutentant in Ireland, and that he was in that post in 1917 (newspaper reports). O Mac suggests Busoni as the horse's name, but we'd need some hard evidence. We're a tough crowd. Oh, and we always love to see John Spooner waxing lyrical about movable boudoirs! Photographer: A. H.
