The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. Description: Mr. John A. Costello looks decidedly discombobulated as he is escorted by Church and State to some event in Donegal. The title suggests that he has a guard of honour of soldiers, but those are actually some of An Garda Síochána's finest. Text Appearing Before Image: And will not He be as good in His care of you as Carrie wouldbe of a lot of pet birds ? Is Carrie kinder than the Lord? Why, no! exclaimed all. Any of us would be kind to birds, said Carrie; but God isbetter than we and will be kind to us, Im sure. We are worth morethan many flocks of birds. Grandpa nodded assent to Carries argument and then told thislittle story: Years ago, when many colored people in our land wereslaves, a preacher of their own number was talking to them from thistext about the sparrows. He repeated over and over the fact thatfive sparrows cost but two farthings, but two farthings, but twofarthings, and yet, said he, God doesnt forget one of them, not oneof them. Think of that, you fifteen hundred dollar darkey. Good! exclaimed Marv, laughing. A fifteen hundred dollar-darkey was certainly safer than a half-farthing sparrow. So Jesus, by teaching from nature, assured His disciples that theyshould be sheltered and fed. Happy are all they who enjoy His careand comfort! Text Appearing After Image: CARINQ FOR THE BIRDS. 512 GRANDPA GOODWINS STORIES. THE VENERABLE PRISONER; Or, BROAD VIEWS FROM A NARROW ISLAND. •nr^O-MORROW I leave you, began Grandpa, for a long visit with your uncle. This will make just one hundred -*- times that we have seated ourselves for an evenings chat on Bible stories, and now, for our last evening, I propose to talk about the last book of the Bible. The children looked sad at this opening statement of Grandp..but knowing his departure was positively fixed, and comforted withthe fact that their father was soon to be home to stay, they chokeddown their sad feelings and asked Grandpa to do what he proposed. When the Apostle John had become very old, Grandpa wenton to say, he was banished to Patmos, a dreary, rocky little island, situated about one hundred miles off the shores of Asia Minor, inthe Aegean Sea. It has mines of tin upon it, and in Johns dayprisoners were sent there to work these mines for the Roman Gov-ernment, which owned the island.
