Zool. 13 192 SMITHSONIAN MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTIONS VOL. 69 Genus LONCHOPHYLLA ThomasThe striking external resemblance of Lonchophylla to Glossophagahas been pointed out in remarks on that genus. The skull is longerand easily distinguishable from that of Glossophaga, by the incom-plete zygomatic arch, and the differing form of the incisors, the uppermedian pair being relatively narrower, higher and more projectingforward, and the lower series having trifid cutting edges. The teethare 34 in number. Two species inhabit the region under review. LONCHOPHYLLA ROBUSTA Miller Rusty Long-tongued Bat [Plate 37, figs. 5, 50] Lonchophylla robusta Miller, Proc. U. S. Nat. Mus., Vol. 42, No. 1882, p. 23,March 6, 1912. Type from cave on Chilibrillo River, Panama. The rusty color and large size distinguish Lonchophylla robustafrom the other Glossophagine bats known to inhabit Panama. Theforearm measures about 45 millimeters. Text Appearing After Image: Fig. 12.—Lonchophylla robusta.No. 179847, U. S. Nat. Mus. About nat. size. The species was first collected by August Busck in a cave on theChilibrillo River near Alhajuela, in 1911. In the following yearspecimens were obtained by me in a limestone cave at about 2,000feet altitude on the slope of the Pirre Mountains near Cana. Thesame cave was inhabited by Lonchophylla concava, Glossophagasoricina leachii, Hemiderma perspicillatum aztecum, Hemidermacastaneum and Desmodus rotundus murinus. Lonchophylla robusta approaches the much smaller species L. mor-dax Thomas in the more important cranial and dental details anddeparts widely from its large congener L. hesperia. G. M. Allen. Noclose comparison with L. concava, the only other species of thegenus known to occur in Panama, is necessary. For the youthful and the active there is nothing more attractive Than the soldiers gay and glittering attire ;But before you join the Service, pray be certain that your nerve is Fully fitted to support you under fire,And dont let your comrades find you, with your weapons cast behind you, Drawing courage from a surreptitious flagon,Having sought for safety quickest where the bullets were the thickest, In the ammunition wagon !19 Deportmental Ditties If your love of disputation makes you fancy thevocation Of those gentlemen who practise at theBar,You will find, at the beginning, that the wages takesome winning, And that prizes are both few betweenand far; When a brief makes no appearance, simple dogged persever-ance Is the quality most likely to ensnare it,While if clients are persistent in remaining cold and distant, You must merely grin and bear it! Description: The Clonbrocks were out foreign again and took this interesting image while there. At first sight I thought the train was a case of a "Pushme Pullyou" as described in Dr. Doolittle but I was mistaken. Description: A gentleman in Tweed jacket and breeches admires a Dolmen or Cromlech at the top of a very stony hill. This image from the Clonbrock Collection has a date, but no location. Understated elegance from Plumstead
Description: For a Monday morning with the lockdowns easing it is nice to celebrate, and what better way to do so than with a small wedding image. The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. When the dark cow leaves the moor
Description: Thomas MacDonagh and friend in a really pleasant, casual portrait. One thing we can be sure of is that this was taken no later than 1916, and as MacDonagh is mature, probably some time after 1900. Who is his friend, and what can we find out about this photograph? Text Appearing Before Image: ow given wayto the Iver Johnson Model 1900 double action, wdiich is noted for its small numberof parts, its new locking device, its fluted cylinder to accommodate long or shortcartridges, and its very neat guard and trigger owing to the use of drop forgings. It is made in 22, 32, and 38 caliber, with barrels 25^, 4^ and 6 inches long. Tlie AMERICAN SMALL ARMS 193 chamber is 5 shot and takes a rim fire cartridge for the 22 caliber, a center orrim fire cartridge for the 32 caUber and a center fire cartridge for the 38 caliber. The Iver Johnson semi-hammerless automatic ejector single gun is new inprinciple, having neither top nor side action. It is easy to load and fire and isabsolutely safe in any position, without the use of bungling safety devices. It canbe opened, closed and fired without changing the position of the hands. Thisis accomplished by the barrel catch, which is made with a loop or ring, as will beseen in Figure 2, and which is easily operated. This catch locks the hammer, Text Appearing After Image: Figure 2. and the hammer, in turn, locks the barrel catch; therefore, the gun, when at fullcock, can not be opened until the trigger is released and the catch operated. If thehammer should be at full cock and the barrel open, the latter could not be closed. This prevents accidents; for should the barrel fly open when the gun is discharged,an accident would happen. Again, if the hammer should be at full cock and thebarrel open, a shell might be inserted, the gun closed and the trigger touched, alsocausing accident. This can not happen, however, as the hammer must be downbefore the gun can be closed. The only way to discharge the gun is to pull thetrigger. The hammer can not be made to strike the shell by any other means. The barrel catch is so constructed that it will take up all wear automatically andthe gun will remain tight. It is not necessary to remove the front stock to takethe gun apart, as a neat and ingenious device, consisting of a flush head lockingbolt, which is easily operat Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.

Text Appearing Before Image: d, a quarter to three-eights of an inch in diameter, and is nearly filled with triangular stony seeds. These seeds arecovered by a pulp, which has the consistence and taste of that of the fruit of the BlackHaw. The manzanita berry is regarded as eatable, and is the favorite food of the grizzly bear. It was frequently eaten by our party, but in most circumstances is too dry, and has too little flavor to be highly relished. As an ornamental shrub, the manzanita is well worthy of introduction into the parks and pleasure grounds of the eastern States ; and since it grows up to the line of perpetual snow on the mountains of California, it would doubtless be hardy in any part of the Union. The wood of this shrub is very dense and hard, of a reddish color, and somewhat resembles that of the apple tree. No use is made of it in the arts at present, except that rustic seats are sometimes formed from its crooked and twisted branches ; for which purpose it is exceedingly well adapted. > 2 > Text Appearing After Image: i c o o c BOTANY. 23 Arbutus Menziesii, Pursh.
