Text Appearing Before Image: ets, of the diocese of the Coutances, in lower Normandy; the castleof Hauteville was their honourable seat; his father Tancred was conspicu-ous in the court and army of the duke; and his military service was furnishedby ten soldiers or knights. Two marriages, of a rank not unworthy of hisown, made him the father of twelve sons, who were educated at home bythe impartial tenderness of his second wife. But a narrow patrimony wasinsufficient for his numerous and daring progeny; they saw around theneighbourhood the mischiefs of poverty and discord, and resolved to seek inforeign wars a more glorious inheritance. Two only remained to perpetu-ate the race, and cherish their fathers age; their ten brothers passedthe Alps, and joined the Apulian camp of the Normans. The elder wereprompted by native spirit; their success encouraged their younger brethren;and the first three in seniority, William, Drogo, and Humphrey, deservedto be the chiefs of their nation and the founders of the new republic. Text Appearing After Image: Norman Woman of the Eleventh Century THE NORMANS 71 [1015-1057 a.d.] Robert was the eldest of the seven sons of the second marriage ; andeven the reluctant praise of his foes has endowed him with the heroicqualities of a soldier and a statesman. His lofty stature surpassed thetallest of his army ; his limbs were cast in the true proportion of strengthand gracefulness ; and to the decline of life he maintained the patient vigourof health and the commanding dignity of his form. Robert, at once andwith equal dexterity, could wield in the right hand his sword, his lance inthe left ; in the battle of Civitella he was thrice unhorsed, and, in the closeof that memorable day, he was adjudged to have borne away the prize ofvalour from the warriors of the two armies. His boundless ambition wasfounded on the consciousness of superior worth ; in the pursuit of greatnesshe was never arrested by the scruples of justice, and seldom moved by thefeelings of humanity ; though not insensible of fame, th Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.

Happy Hatoriffic(ish) weekend to you all.
Description: A group of three, two ladies with fine hats on board. And a gentleman sitting down while the ladies stand? Miss Nolan of Brownswood, Carrick-on-Suir was the lady who made the commission, but is she in the image, and what was the occasion? +++ UPDATE +++ Looks as if this one will have to simmer on the back burner for a while. No Brownswood Nolans in either the 1901 or 1911 censuseses. And Evening Mary could find nothing in any online newspapers. Description: Thomas MacDonagh and friend in a really pleasant, casual portrait. One thing we can be sure of is that this was taken no later than 1916, and as MacDonagh is mature, probably some time after 1900. Who is his friend, and what can we find out about this photograph? The Italian workman, thepeddler, the wayfarers of the humbler sort, have alwaysstuck to the open road on account of its cheapness.Rather than pay railway fares, or being without themoney to do so, they trudge over the Alps. A trip over an Alpine pass in early summer is ofdeep interest. Climbing from the Swiss side, ourcarriage or motor-car mounts steadily by smooth roadscleverly cut in the slopes of the hills, so that the easiestway of ascent is taken. As we rise the air growscolder and colder, and the snow-line draws nearer andnearer. Now the wheels of the carriage crunch aridgrind over ice and snow, and coats and wraps aredrawn closer as the travellers thread the wintry pass. Here the road is marked by posts which stand abovethe snow, and glaciers hang high above the path. Thegreatest danger in the pass is the fall of an avalanche. 2 Text Appearing After Image: AH ALPINE PASS IN SUMMER. fajfg 2. Over the Alps to Italy A field of ice and snow will sometimes break loosefrom a steep slope and slide down the hillside, carryingall before it. All that comes in its path is engulfed inits rushing mass and overwhelmed. A small avalanchemay at times be started by a very slight impulse, suchas the rolling of a heavy carriage past the slope wherea mass of ice and snow is insecurely resting, or even byvoices shouting and singing in the rare thin air, but asmall avalanche may prove extremely dangerous. At last the farther side of the pass is gained, and ona clear day a halt is made to survey the scene. If weare crossing by the Spliigen, the famous pass almost inthe centre of the Alpine chain, which leads fromSwitzerland into Italy, we shall enjoy a magnificentprospect. Before us the Alps fall away to the plain ofLombardy, and the vast level, far below, stretches awayuntil it is lost in the blue haze of immense distance. Now the descent begins. Most of these stars are toofaint to be separately examined with the spectroscope, so that wecannot say whether they have the same spectrum as the nebulae. The spectrum of most clusters is continuous, indicating that theindividual stars are truly stellar in their nature. In a few cases, however, clusters are composed of a mixture of nebulosity (usuallynear their centre) and of stars, and the spectrum in such cases iscompound in its nature, so as to indicate radiation both by gaseousand solid matter. § 5. DISTRIBUTION OF NEBULA AND CLUSTERSON THE SURFACE OF THE CELES-TIAL SPHERE. The following map (Fig. 132) by Mr. R. A. Proctor, gives at aglance the distribution of the nebulae on the celestial sphere withreference to the Milky Way, whose boundaries only are indicated. Text Appearing After Image: STAR-CLUSTERS. 467 The position of each nebula is marked by a dot; where the dots arethickest there is a region rich in nebulae. A casual examinationshows that such rich regions are distant from the Galaxy, and itwould appear that it is a general law that the nebulae are distri-buted in greatest number around the two poles of the galacticcircle, and that in a general way their number at any point of thesphere increases with their distance from this circle. This wasnoticed by the elder Herschel, who constructed a map similar tothe one given. It is precisely the reverse of the law of apparentdistribution of the true star-clusters, which in general lie in or nearthe Milky Way. CHAPTER V. SPECTRA OF FIXED STARS. 1. CHARACTERS OF STELLAR SPECTRA. Soon after the discovery of the spectroscope, Dr. Huggins andProfessor W. A. The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”.
