Text Appearing Before Image: experienced official, has grasped the situation in a thoroughlybusiness-like manner. The funeral of Conductor Charles Wood-cock was held on January 3. He enteredthe service of the Baltimore and Ohio32years ago. For the past six veirs he hadbeen incapacitated because of illness. TheBrotherhood of Railway Trainmen had fullcharge of the funeral, under the direction ofE. W. Burch. The pall-bearers were: 0. B.Howe, J. P. Alston, R. L. Much, E. Cauf-man, W. W. Kelly and D. C. Wood. Engineer A. B. Haller and wife weresnapped by your Correspondent as theywere gazing at a sight-seeing airplane.Engineer Haller is one of the fuel savers ofthe Baltimore and Ohio. Everv run is anefficiency run with him, and he has beenofficially commended on his good work. Sitting on the stone wall is JackieDean, 6 years old, son of Mack Dean, switch operator, eastbound hump. He is abright boy and, like his dad, will be a goodrailroad man. Here we see Warren Harding Axline, 9months old, .son of Lieutenant W. Axline, Text Appearing After Image: Engineer and Mrs. Haller, watching an airplaneBrunswick, Md. Baltimore and Ohio Police. He has all theappearance of becoming a shrewd andfaithful officer like his Dad. Four Classes of Railroad Men Having traveled extensively in theUnited States and foreign countries, I havebeen greatly impressed by the customs ofthe different classes of people with whom Ihave come in contact. There is somethingabout the railroad workman that appealsto me. Among trainmen, we find what isknown as the boomer, a fellow whonever settles down, and who only waitsuntil he makes a couple of pays—thenis gone to some other clime. Like a pro-verbial rolling stone, he never gathers anymoss, and finally ends up as a hash slingerin some railroad beanery. Then we find the college and office-bredman, who goes railroading in search ofhealth and excitement, and who, after a fewmonths experience, can give conductorscards and spades about railroading fromA to Z, and has the Book of Rules skinneda thousand miles. The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. Description: A group of three, two ladies with fine hats on board. And a gentleman sitting down while the ladies stand? Miss Nolan of Brownswood, Carrick-on-Suir was the lady who made the commission, but is she in the image, and what was the occasion? +++ UPDATE +++ Looks as if this one will have to simmer on the back burner for a while. No Brownswood Nolans in either the 1901 or 1911 censuseses. And Evening Mary could find nothing in any online newspapers. We shall sit back (if we can get a chance to sit down with these young feller-me-lads hogging all the seating) and await developments... Photographer: A. H. Text Appearing Before Image: ounder of the pneumatictire industry; that the history of Dunlop Tiresextends from that time to the present through thesuccessive developments of tricycle and bicycle,as well as automobile, motor truck and motorcycle ? The original idea for a pneumatic tire wasfirst advanced in 1845, but it was unappreciated, neglected and forgotten. Dunlop, forty-three yearslater, knew nothing of it, and his tire, which washis own original invention, led to the immediateestablishment of the pneumatic tire industry. Dunlop made that first tire for his boys tri-cycle because he thought the vehicles narrowtires were too hard both on the ground and onthe rider. He quickly realized what his inventionwould mean to the bicycle; but its real signifi-cance was far greater, as we know, who havewitnessed the spectacular progress of the auto-mobile—then undreamed of. It was only a short time after Dunlops inven-tion that the organization resulting from it becamethe first to manufacture and sell an improved type Text Appearing After Image: THE SATURDAY EVENING POS-T 99 THAT IS OLD of tire, involving the principle of inner tube andopen casing in both well-known forms—theclincher type, as well as the one with wire re-inforcement in the bead—long known as theDunlop type. It was that principle of innertube and open casing which made the pneumatictire practical for the automobile. The way in which the Dunlop idea and theDunlop Tire have circled the globe parallels inrapidity and intense interest the extraordinaryindustrial achievements of the builders of theAmerican automotive industry. Few Americans realize just what the growthof this Dunlop institution has been. Over inEngland there is, near Birmingham, a great tire-building city which in size and output ranks amongthe large tire-building plants of the world. Dunlop Tires are manufactured in England,France, Germany, Japan, Australia and Canada. There are Dunlop factory branches in Belgium,Holland, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, SouthAmerica, South Africa and India.
