It’s a long road to Tipperary
Description: Having visited the home of the current All Ireland Hurling Champions yesterday, today we move to their great rivals, the Premier County, and the town of that name. We have seen Tipperary before but never this particular view with the winding road leading to the town. Could this Lawrence Royal plate have been taken from a railway embankment? Description: Mr. Joseph A. Nolan, Coal Merchant purchased a bone shaker if ever there was one. The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. Smiles all round for a good beginning!
Description: A lovely smiley wedding group from Mr. Poole to start the week on a positive note! The happy couple, the witnesses, and the clergy all have broad smiles, while the bride has a firm hold on her man. Ordered by Mr. Richard Siggins of 28 The Glen in Waterford. What can we find out about them? +++ UPDATE +++ We found out ridiculously fabulous information about them, and much of the heavy lifting was done by Bernard Healy! Meet engine driver Richard Siggins and Emily Cozens, both of 28 The Glen, Waterford. They got married in the Cathedral in Waterford on 23 October 1944, and their witnesses were William Siggins and Mary Josephine Cozens. The presiding priest was Fr. The end of the line...
Description: Cavan might be the last place you would want to end up for Christmas, but that is only if you didn't know the many attractions of the town! A lovely shot from Mr. O'Dea of the railway station in Cavan with a full stop, which is what we will be doing until after the Christmas. On behalf of all at the NLI and from the Marys, we would like to wish all our many followers and contributors a very happy and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous New Year. For those who do not celebrate Christmas we wish you the compliments of the season. Just to remind us that the season is made of children's memories here are the final lines from a poem by Patrick Kavanagh: I was six Christmases of age My father played the melodeon, My mother milked the cows, And I had a prayer like a white rose pinned, On the Virgin Mary's blouse. Description: “Injured soldier being cared for by the Red Cross on the South Western Front during the Irish Civil War”! Steaming into history
Description: Clearance testing N.I.R. 56 at Clonsilla in Co. Dublin seems to have attracted some admirers, including a member of the canine fraternity who has the best seat in the house! A very different scene I imagine to the Clonsilla of today, with its role as part of Dublin’s commuter belt! Photographer: James P. Amazing Grace – with a bit of dodge and burn?
Description: A lovely, happy wedding group this morning from the Poole Photographic Collection. Commissioned by Mr. H. A. Grace of 108 Ballyruckle (Ballytruckle?), Waterford. There appears to have been quite a bit of manipulation of the image to improve or otherwise alter it! +++ UPDATE +++ Gorgeous information on this lovely wedding photo. We knew that Mr Grace of 108 Ballytruckle, Waterford ordered it, and that it was taken on 18 August 1943. Thanks be to all the digitised family history records now available, we got to vigorously ring our People Identified bell. This photograph marked the wedding of Edward Grace and Ellen Angela Power, who got married on Wednesday, 18 August 1943 in St. John's church, Waterford. Edward Grace was a fitter of 42 Lower Yellow Road. We have no occupation for Ellen Angela Power, but she lived at 108 Ballytruckle, Waterford. The witnesses were William Grace (left of groom) and Josephine Power (right of bride). Photographer: A. H. The Sugar Loaf? Hardly!
Description: For those Irish followers and especially those inside the Pale, there is only one Sugar Loaf, and that is beside Dublin Bay in Co. Wicklow. However, down on the Cork/Kerry border they claim to have their own Sugar Loaf! Viewed as this one is from Glengarriff, it is like a jewel in a crown. +++ UPDATE +++ Thanks to beachcomber australia for narrowing the date from a broad 1865-1914, down to early 1890s. This is all based on an entertaining, but fairly scientific, examination of fancy benches, height of fir trees, Library of Congress images, top hats, and poor paint jobs. Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Circa 1865-1914 – see comments, probably early 1890s NLI Ref: L_CAB_01390 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie
