The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. Themale has one round black spot on each upper wing, thefemale has two and sometimes three. The accompanyingfigures show the three stages of the cabbage butterfly. Many other butterflies can quite as easily be reared asthis ©he. The larva of a handsome species feeds on the leaves of the milk weed plant and is a good one for thispurpose. Or one may take a common hairy caterpillarand rear moth or butterfly in the same way. Sometimesthey are ready to pass into the pupa stage and so need nofurther feeding. It sometimes happens that a larva will fail to go throughits proper changes. This is generally due to the presenceof parasitic insects in it, the most common of which isthe larva of the ichneumon fly. It seems odd that oneinsect larva should prey upon another. It is the perfectichneumon insect, however, that opens the attack. Withits long ovipositor it pierces the body of butterfly cater- Text Appearing After Image: THE CABBAGE BUTTERFLY. pillars and deposits its eggs in them. The eggs hatchinto larvse and the larvae fed upon the tissues of thecaterpillars. Sometimes the latter die before the parasiticlarvae complete their transformation, and in this case, ofcourse, the parasites perish as well as their host. Butcommonly the caterpillar lingers and the larvae pass intothe pupa stage and finally into the perfect ichneumonfly. Indeed we should do great injustice to the instinctsof the ic neunion and to the whole tribe of insects asrepresented by it if we supposed it laid its eggs in anysituation where their development was not pretty wellassured. In spite of the loss of some eggs no doubt theichneumon could not find a better place to deposit themthan the body of the larval butterfly. When practising the front lever, bend the arms atfirst in order to prevent fatigue and swinging. Thehands should be over center of gravity of the body. The illustration shows the way most gymnasts per-form the feat. The gymnast who posed for Figure 15 did so forthe first time, and consequently did not do justice tothe exercise. The body in figure should be horizontal, the left arm and leg in a horizontal line.
