When material is placed inthe oven it is usually at room temperature. It must beheated to the maximum temperature desired. After thework has reached its maximum temperature no additionalheat is absorbed by it regardless of the length of time it maybe held at that temperature, as a certain amount of heat isrequired for raising the temperature of a given substancethrough a given range of temperature irrespective of thelength of time consumed in heating. However, if the heat-ing is accomplished in one hour a certain amount of powerwill be required, but if the heating is accomplished in halfthe time, double the amount of power expressed in kilowattswill be necessary with exactly the same kilowatt-hour con-sumption. The total weight of the material supportingparts, etc., heated, multiplied by the degrees rise in tem-perature and by the specific heat of the metal is the heat Text Appearing After Image: HEATERS AND ARMATURES IN PLACE READY FOR BAKING required in British thermal units. This divided by 3412is the energy consumption in kilowatt-hours. The amount of power required for heating the air used inventilating the oven depends on the initial and final tem-peratures of the air, the weight of air entering and itsspecific heat. With the kiln-type oven used in this case airis taken in at room temperature and is discharged at theoven temperature. Ventilation is Necessary In order to carry off moisture as it is forced out of theequipment being baked, an efficient system of forced ventila-tion is a great advantage. In the present oven, as installedin Brooklyn, air is taken in through a ventilating duct atthe bottom of the oven. This duct is of rectangular shape,6 in. x 3^ in. and it is provided with holes in the top throughwhich the air enters. The air is thus taken in at the oventemperature and is drawn through the receiving duct at thebottom of the oven and sent outside the oven thro Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.

The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. Cousturur, at Fleurysur Andelle (Eure), harnessed to a tilbury, traveled fifty-eight miles andback on two consecutive days, going at a trot and without being touchedwith a whip. This was over the road from Lyons la Fossette to PointAndmere and back, through a hilly country. The last thirteen and three-fourthsmiles were made in one hour, although the mare was obliged to pass herstable at the forty-first mile to finish the distance. The foregoing history of the Percheron race will give the reader anidea of the origin, development and status of the breed as it exists inFrance. Although recognized there as the superior of all other draftbreeds in that country, the preservation of its pedigrees and the publica-tion of a stud book will add greatly to its value. The stars shone through thecloud-rifts, and, looking seawards, there was a great glory on thewaters, for a few yards out from the pier lay the Serapis with herlong line of ports lighted up, her white sides and golden scroll-work gleaming brightly in the glare of the gas-lamps on shore, and of the lanterns displayed at the companions and over thesides to show the way. Her boats were alongside the pier ; andleaving Groot and his auxiliaries to contend with the piles ofluggage which were shot out on the platform, we embarked, andin a few seconds more were standing in the blaze of lamps in thesaloon, where sheen of snowy damask, and glitter of silver andglass on the long table, gave note of welcome supper. CaptainGlyn received the members of the suite, and the officers did theirbest, late as it was, to induct them in their cabins, and makethem at home ; and we found Mr. Hall already installed on boardas he had preferred taking a passage from Portsmouth to theoverland journey. As far as one could seethere was the same multitude of birds, all head-ing for this one island. The island itself wasblack with the birds already settled for thenight, but each new arrival seemed to find aresting place either on the surface of the rockor in the caves underneath. For countlessages these birds have occupied these sterilevolcanic rocks as their resting place, and havedeposited the guano which has brought mil-lions of dollars of wealth into the Peruviantreasury. A glimpse of this remarkable birdlife shows how the guano has accumulated insuch enormous quantities. The northern part of Chile contains thedreariest section of this forlorn coast. Thereare no harbours, and a tremendous surf whichrolls half way around the world before itstrikes a breakwater dashes into foam uponthese beaches. Several prosperous towns arelocated here as a result of the workings of Text Appearing After Image: The West Coast 33 natures laboratories. To reach these ports itis necessary to trust yourself to one of theboatmen, who crowd around the ladder as soonas the vessel drops anchor. Judicious bargain-ing is always advisable, and never pay theboatman until he has returned you safely toyour floating hotel. The boat is guidedthrough the surf with amazing skill, and it isvery seldom that an accident occurs. Theysometimes crowd each other off, however, intheir eagerness to get the best position at thebottom of the ladder and secure the first pas-sengers. But all these men are good swim-mers, and the only result is a good wetting andmuch amusement for the steamers passengerswho welcome any diversion. Arica is the first port of importance in Chileat the north. It is only a days journey fromMollendo, the last Peruvian port. The Peru-vian heaves a sigh when he enters Arica, butthere is some hope in it, for he trusts to addthis province to Perus possessions at sometime in the future again. DeRaulet is the latest advocate of this method, but with the exception ofa few Italian surgeons, few operators have adopted the Tansini method. Warrens Method.—In 1904 Warren reported 38 per cent, of cures in 60 operativecases of mammary cancer of the non-medullary type, while only 7 per cent, of 40 cases ofmedullary carcinoma were permanently cured. The method which Warren employspossesses many features of merit. The incision employed in this operation is made from the anterior and outer margin o£ the axillarunning a little above its upper border and the line of insertion of the pectoralis major muscle, around thelower border of the breast to a point on the boundary line of the inner and lower quadrant. If there is aserious doubt as to the malignant nature of the growth, the breast can be lifted up from below by carry-ing the dissection up the last half of the incision more deeply, and exploring the mammary region on its Text Appearing After Image: Fig. 251.—Illustrating Warrens operation for mammary carcinoma. Primary skin incisions. posterior surface more deeply. It has been our practice in doubtful cases to make an incision aroundthe periphery of the breast in its lower outer aspect through which the entire posterior surface of theorgan can be explored. With the diagnosis of malignancy verified, this primary cut is merely continuedin either direction as already described. Otherwise it serves as an ordinary Thomas incision. The second incision in Warrens operation is made beginning at the outer extremity of the outeraxillary fold, gradually diverging from the first incision as it approaches the breast, and, sweeping aroundthe upper and inner margin of the organ meets the first incision at its terminal point. Before proceeding to the second step of the operation a flap should be marked out on the outer sideof the pectoral region; to do this the knife divides the skin above the middle of the first incision, i.e., onthe outer e Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work.
