Myxoma.—The rarest of all forms of rectal neoplasms con-sists of mucous tissue. The only case reported where the diag-nosis was verified by the microscope was that of Jones, inwhich a large ovoid tumor projected into the upper part ofthe rectum. When removed this tumor was found to consistof three separate growths, the largest being about the size of apullets egg. Spina Bifida.—Cysts filled with spinal fluid are not uncom-mon over the sacrum. In rare instances the opening in thebone may be anteriorly, and the spinal fluid finds its way for-ward and forms a cyst which projects into the rectum, causing Text Appearing After Image: Fig. 169.—Adenoid (Soft) Polyp. partial or complete occlusion. The diagnosis and treatment ofthis form of tumor are given in the chapter on diseases, injuries, and tumors of the coccyx. Osteoma.—Osteoma is a benign tumor of bony formation, which is said to have its origin in the sacral region in very rareinstances and to assume proportions sufficient to producepartial or complete obstruction of the rectum. The author hasnever seen such a case nor has he been able to find any authen-ticated case recorded. Ano-vulvar Elephantiasis.—This disease is characterized bylarge, firm, light-colored, usually ovoid, tumor-like swellings inthe ano-vulvar region (Fig. 168). They may be smooth andcovered by practically normal skin (elephantiasis glabra) or theymay be irregularly nodulated (elephantiasis condylomata). And so much does it make itself apart of the landscape that it is only bv chance, or by seeingit take up its position, that we observe it at all. Othersmore immediately concerned are also deceived, and atlength a victim chances to come within the danger-zone.The picture is suddenly disturbed by one quick movement, one sudden swoop of that spear-hke beak poised on thatlong and graceful neck, and—the chase is over as soon asit has begun. French and British make a line to hold up the enemy
Description: This photograph, probably taken by John Warwick Brooke, shows a line of Allied soldiers lying across a grassy field. A French machine-gun crew are kneeling in the line, manning their gun. Some of the soldiers can be seen digging shallow scoops in front of where they are lying. British troops were taught to dig shallow scrapes (or 'scoops') lying down, as temporary protection for a new position. A hollow 12 inches (30 centimetres) deep could be dug in this way in an hour. The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. And the plot thickens...
Description: Mr. Seumas O’Neill of Cashel, German Plot prisoner of Durham Gaol. A fine, handsome young man in semi-military garb with a Nationalist badge on his lapel, locked up in a British gaol. Who was Seumas, and what was the German Plot? What happened to him thereafter? Yesterday’s virtual trip through Germany, Switzerland, and Austria was most entertaining, and a welcome relief from the trials and tribulations of the pandemic, whose name must not be mentioned! Description: Thomas MacDonagh and friend in a really pleasant, casual portrait. One thing we can be sure of is that this was taken no later than 1916, and as MacDonagh is mature, probably some time after 1900. Who is his friend, and what can we find out about this photograph? Comrades in arms sharing the pain.
Description: “Injured soldier being cared for by the Red Cross on the South Western Front during the Irish Civil War”! A long title for a photograph that tells a tale from 98 years ago somewhere in Munster. The wounded man appears to be in considerable pain and is being held and comforted by his friend and colleague. Two things that stand out for me are the makeshift Red Cross armbands on the two medics, and the old-fashioned kit bag seemingly holding their first aid supplies! Photographer: W. D.
