Text Appearing Before Image: ogist has paid greater attention both to the naturalaffinities, and to the illustration of the genera allied withthese birds, than Professor Temminck ; and I therefore feelpleasure in naming this bird in honour of that excellentornithologist, from whom whenever I have differed, it hasbeen from the sole wish of eliciting; truth. Total leng-th fromthe bill to the tail eight inches ; bill one inch from the gape, and half from the end of the nostrils; the colours of thebird are best seen in the figure ; the middle of the body, andthe quill feathers, deep black ; legs three inches from thenaked thigh to the tip of the middle toe, the claw of whichis serrated internally; tail round; the middle feathers notspotted ; the two next with a black dot near the tip, which,in the next pair, is further broken into two white dots ; theouter pair white. These birds inhabit the arid tracts ofAfrica, at a distance from the sea, and run amazingly swift. One species has occasionally visited England. PI. 106. Curved-bill Humming Bird, golden green; chin and fore part ofthe throat violet-blue; tail even; wings falcated, greater quillswith the shafts dilated and compressed. I HAVE already offered some observations on the remark-able construction in the wings of T. falcatus, figured atpi. 83; and the bird nove before us is another unrecordedspecies, possessing exactly the same formation. I was atfirst inclined to believe this bird was the male of the T.latipemiis, (or POiseau Moiiche a larges tui/aux of Buffon),from the under plumage in that species being uniform grey,a common indication of the female Humming Birds; buta further comparison of the two has proved this suppositionto be erroneous. Understated elegance from Plumstead
Description: For a Monday morning with the lockdowns easing it is nice to celebrate, and what better way to do so than with a small wedding image. Some people, even though they have been posed, have a natural elegance, and the couple in this shot have just that. The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. All fall down...
Description: There is something winterish and depressing about todays image from Arthur Henri. Dull and misty atmosphere and a crop that looks as though it has been burned by the frost and is now wilted would not cheer one up? Dangan, Thomastown is the place and we even have a date but what else is there to find out about this? Photographer: A. H. They're Peelers not Sojers
Description: Mr. John A. Costello looks decidedly discombobulated as he is escorted by Church and State to some event in Donegal. The title suggests that he has a guard of honour of soldiers, but those are actually some of An Garda Síochána's finest. Their uniform, with the closed collars, should be some guide to the latest date this could have been taken? Where, why and what? Photographers: Denis Tynan 1923-2010 Collection: Tynan Photographic Collection Date: Circa 1950-1960 Thursday, 24 May 1951 NLI Ref: NPA TYN651 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie
