Whenbroken, they are seen to consist of two distinct parts—a thin ligneousaxis or centre, which is nearly inert, and a thick cortical layer, whichhas an herbaceous, acrid, rather bitter taste and a slightly nauseousodor. A distinction is made of black, red and gray ipecacuanha, from differences in the color of the epidermis; but they are allderived from the same plant, and are the same in properties andcomposition. Thus the tale ended. 23 THE WRECK OF THE HESPERUS It was the schooner Hesperus, That sailed the wintry sea;And the skipper had taken his little daughter, To bear him company. Blue were her eyes as the fairy-flax,Her cheeks like the dawn of day, And her bosom white as the hawthorn buds,That ope in the month of May. The skipper he stood beside the helm, His pipe was in his mouth. And he watched how the veering flaw did blo^v* The smoke now West, now South. Then up and spake an old Sailor, Had sailed to the Spanish Main, I pray thee, put into yonder port. For I fear a hurricane. Last night, the moon had a golden ring. And to-night no moon we see! Down came the storm, and smote amain The vessel in its strength ;She shuddered and paused, like a frighted steed. Then leaped her cables length. Come hither! come hither! my little daughter, And do not tremble so;For I can weather the roughest gale That ever wind did blow. He wrapped her warm in his seamans coat Against the stinging blast; He cut a rope from a broken spar, And bound her to the mast. O father! I hear the church-bells ring, Oh say, what may it be ? T is a fog-bell on a rock-bound coast! — And he steered for the open sea. O father! I hear the sound of guns. Oh say, what may it be? Some ship in distress, that cannot live In such an angry sea!25 THE WRECK OF THE HESPERUS O father! I see a gleaming light, Oh say, what may it be? The Kny-Sheerer Company has constructed the bathtub ofhighly enamelled wood and lined it with tinned copper, thus render-ing it easily cleaned. The height of the tub saves much back strainto the nurses, whose constant attention is required for friction duringcontinuance of the bath. A similar tub has been in constant use inthe hospital for five years, and has proved satisfactory and serviceable. THE FULL BATH. 135 The Bukr Portable Bath. When the patient or his friends shrink from the seemingly heroictub bath, or when the latter is impracticable on account of lack ofroom or for other reason, the tub of Dr. A. H. Burr, of Chicago, servesa very useful purpose. It consists, first, of a large rubber sheet, withrings attached near its margins by elastic tapes; second, of a lightwooden crib, with fastenings along the lower rail to hold the sheet. Text Appearing After Image: Fig. 42.—Burr Portable Bath. A, Frame ; B, complete. This frame folds by two movements into a compact bundle. The ac-cessories are a hose with metal yoke for a siphon, a sponge, and a baththermometer. In use, the rubber sheet is first slipped under the pa-tient, brought up over the pillow, and tucked up alongside the body. The frame is then unfolded, placed down over the patient, resting onthe mattress, surrounding patient, pillow, and rubber sheet. Theedges of the sheet are then drawn up over the top rail of the cribdown to the lower rail, and fastened by its rings. This completes alight and perfect tub, capable of holding twenty gallons of water. Itcan be emptied by siphon in four minutes (Fig. 42). A Sim2)le Bed Bath.—Dr. A. C. At first sight I thought the train was a case of a "Pushme Pullyou" as described in Dr. Doolittle but I was mistaken. Description: A gentleman in Tweed jacket and breeches admires a Dolmen or Cromlech at the top of a very stony hill. This image from the Clonbrock Collection has a date, but no location. The Smyths?
Description: Our catalogue tells us that this lovely family group was commissioned by Mrs. Smyth, 44 Poleberry, Waterford, which should help you with your deliberations. I always look forward to reading the comments on a photo like this one. It is fantastic that you can discover so much information about the people in the photos we feature here on Flickr, it really does bring them alive. +++ UPDATE +++ Well, this family photograph led to a lively chase up and down Poleberry in Waterford, trying to match likely families, and likely dogs in online dog license records. But the main problem is the “unusual” house numbering of Poleberry. Our Bernard Healy is not usually given to cast asparagus at anyone, but even he was driven to this extreme: “I think we have to conclude that the census enumerator was drunk, or the houses were re-numbered at some stage”. The ants troubled us. Before the break of day, we all rose suddenlyfrom our sandy bed; the dogs skulking in with tails between their legs;all more or less uncomfortably aroused by the growling of two largetigers on the opposite side of the Piiiipini. A light breeze was passingfrom us to them; they snufied a breakfast, while the Indians silentlyhung their heads. I was looking upon the water, expecting to see themplunge in and swim towards us.
