Friary Lane, Beverley, c.1865 (archive ref PH-4-7)
Description: (Buy exclusive historic East Yorkshire prints from East Riding Photos http://picturearchivesorg/eastridingphotos) This vintage view of the Minster from Friary Lane is quite interesting as it shows a level crossing over the Hull to Scarborough line where there is now a footbridge. The railway came to Beverley in 1846, courtesy of the Hull and Selby Railway Company, which belonged to George Hudson, the Railway King. At this time the road was part of Chantry Lane, but was renamed Friars Lane in 1928. The station was built on land known as the Trinities, on the site of a medieval hospital. Behind the wall on the right is the Dominican Friary. Not even a Wandering Tumbleweed in sight!
Description: A neglected and abandoned looking Railway Station at Maguiresbridge, Fermanagh in 1959. The weeds are coming up along the permanent way, the platform and even the buildings and the decision to cut off all rail connections with the Republic take effect. It looks like it was a really important stop along the line at that time so the impact locally must have been significant? Photographer: James P. O'Dea Collection:James P. Description: A view from the bridge in Thomastown, County Kilkenny overlooking the River Nore with many buildings stacked up above the river. There are sheds and warehouses along the bank with a church and convent above. But, down in the river there are some strange sights, a jarvey's car parked in the water as a water taxi and what appears to be a catamaran with people enjoying the delights of the Nore??? The Donkey, The Fiddler and the Sugarloaf

Bring Flowers of the Fairest - to Clonmel
Description: We've been to the river at Clonmel before and the boat club but today we are in "Upsy Downsy" format and with the most sublime reflections. Indeed the reflections are so good it is really only possible to right the image by the writing giving the location at the bottom! Why the title? Today is the !st of May and apart from being "International Workers Day" is also the day when an entire generation seemed to wait to hear Father Sidney McEwen singing a hymn to the Virgin Mary. Description: We've been to Kylemore before and may even have seen this church before but we've been down the West for most of this week and it felt like a good ending to visit the beauty of Connemara! Kylemore Abbey and especially this church are in a most beautiful setting but it also appears to be most unlikely for such an establishment. Wild and rugged terrain must have been difficult enough to reach when it was first mooted and later developed. Description: While the West of Ireland is so much in the news these days it is good to remember that the land, no more than the people, is rugged and varied. It has been settled for thousands of years and while the only traces may be circles in the land or old passage tombs like this one they are proof of life and death in the West. This Cromlech/Dolmen is in the Cavan Burren park in County Clare Cavan and is all bricked up which begs the question - to keep the dead in or the living out? Perhaps it was done more recently to provide shelter for people or animals? Sticking out like a jagged tooth
Description: Research Mary has gone all Imperial on us these days and we haven't had too many Clonbrocks to view and comment on so today we go down a little in the peerage to the Lords and Ladies of the Dillon household! A ruined castle surrounded by vegetation somewhere - but where? That is one of the beauties of their collection, it could be anywhere. From Connacht to the farthest reaches of Austria or Switzerland? Can we find it and is it still standing? A castle fit for a President?
Description: On the day when the President of the United States of America is due to visit the historic town of Carlingford we have, serendipitously, a fine Imperial plate image of King John's Castle in that town! The Cooley peninsula and Carlingford Lough are some of the hidden gems of the island with views of the Mourne mountains and south Ulster across the water and ready access to the hinterland on both sides. Where the streets have no name...
Description: According to our much loved and derided Krazy Kataloguers this shot of Clare Castle is on Main Street, Ennis, Co. Clare:-( In most likely is Clare Castle NEAR Ennis in County Clare but an unusual view of the castle and with an interesting foreground. You are all welcome back after the Easter break and hopefully you are not suffering from an overdose of Chocolate? Hey mister, that lawn won't cut itself
Description: While one neighbour has been digging for gold and another playing Boy Scouts the gentleman in the shot is resting while the lawnmower also takes a break! The Hill of Howth the caption says and while there is not a lot of detail it is an interesting shot nonetheless! That fine, rectangular patch of lawn looks perfect for a spot of bowling or perhaps croquet and it certainly stands out amidst the rough grass nearby. That tent may have been commonplace at the time but we would probably associate it with scouting or the military? Water, water everywhere...
Description: The caption on this Morgan image says "Sports Fields and houses" and shows a very fine establishment but with a dreadful inundation. For the 1950's the set up at the establishment is very elaborate and the flood must have been a nightmare for the stable. Where was/is it and what does it look like now? An Cláir Abú in Port Lairge
Description: The De La Salle hurling team in Waterford but with a wonderful twist. Each of the players appears to have their native county's name As Gaeilge written on their hurley. You have men from Corcaigh (Cork), Gaillimhe (Galway), Cill Coinnigh (Kilkenny), Tiobraid Aran (Tipperary), Luimneach (Limerick the Current All Ireland Champions). The man with the sliothair (ball) and apparently the team captain proudly displays his county An Cláir (Clare). There are also two men with local club names who may have been actual Waterford men? All lined up and ready for takeoff
Description: Dublin Airport, Collinstown way back in 1954 with a collection of airplanes lined up for boarding and eventual takeoff! Given that the airport has changed so much over the years and the controversies ongoing today this does harken back to a different time, a different industry and looking at that horizon a very different Dublin. Even the ramp where the aircraft are parked with it's patchwork effect shows how much construction methods have changed! Walking Shelley - on a bike?
Description: A charming photo of Shelley Walk in Blackrock, Co. Louth for this mornings offering. Clearly a place for walks and cycles and, given the time based on the clothing, perhaps horse riding also? Hopefully it has been retained for the same purpose today? All ready to dance the Charleston
Description: We were feeling romantic this morning and so a wedding photo was the order of the day! Mr. A. Tingey (not Tringey as per the catalogue) of Moran's Hotel in Dublin placed the order. The ladies are all dolled up with those lovely hats, fashionable dresses, beautiful bouquets and silk stockings so very much "a la mode" and looking very charming. The gentlemen on the other hand are looking rather dull, dry and conventional. It was ever thus!!! Photographer: A. H. Description: Given the topography many of the photographs we have seen of Drogheda from the old collections like Lawrence and Eason have been taken from heights, be it the hills or the viaduct but this Monkey Morgan is different. To begin this is literally from above as it is from the daring pilots airplane. Secondly it is from a different perspective as it is looking down the river Boyne towards the sea whereas all those we have seen before were from the other direction or from higher buildings and lower down. This one was taken in April of 1955 so much has changed since this was taken. Photographer: Alexander Campbell “Monkey” Morgan Collection: Morgan Aerial Photographic Collection Date: ca. The Big Climb Down
Description: A really different photo from the Monkey Morgan Collection today with the President of India, Jawaharlal Nehru and a colleague climbing down from an aircraft. The Krazy Kataloger has done it again and suggested that the colleague is none other than Eamonn DeValera but I've see the man in the flesh and he was not a person of colour so that is not right. The two were however very good friends and shared a mutual admiration. What can we find out about this image, where did it take place and what was the context? Early mobile phones but no Social Media
Description: The Krazy Katalogers have entitled this "Semaphore of Haulbowline lighthouse, Irish Lights Department flag displayed, Co. Down"! That means that there are two conundrums therein. There are at least three signalling systems on display, the Semaphore Flags, the Signalling Flags and the light for Morse Code Signalling. The other conundrum, at least for Morning Mary, is Haulbowline and Co. Down being listed together? The only Haulbowline we are familiar with is down in Cork Harbour but perhaps that one has a twin up North like the recent shot of St. John's Lighthouse? Photographer: Ball, Robert S. A farewell to Eireann
