Market Weighton Station was demolished in 1967 as part of the infamous railway cutbacks of Dr Beeching. This image shows it back in its heyday, before any talk of scrapping the direct Hull-York line.

This vintage view of the Minster from Friary Lane is quite interesting as it shows a level crossing over the Hull to Scarborough line where there is now a footbridge. The railway came to Beverley in 1846, courtesy of the Hull and Selby Railway Company, which belonged to George Hudson, the Railway King. At this time the road was part of Chantry Lane, but was renamed Friars Lane in 1928. The station was built on land known as the Trinities, on the site of a medieval hospital. Behind the wall on the right is the Dominican Friary.

Have a group of gentlemen hunters and their hounds gone slightly off course in the pursuit of a fox?! No, in actual fact, Saturday Market was the meeting point for the annual Holderness Hunt, seen here as it sets off down Toll Gavel in the 1900s and onwards into the countryside.

A. Reyrolle & Co. Ltd was founded by Alphonse Reyrolle (1864 - 1919), a French engineer who established a small switchgear shop in London in 1886. In 1901 his business moved to Hebburn and the firm began to grow with the recruitment of Henry Clothier. Clothier helped them develop large switchgears for power stations, a product the company became famous for.
Over the years, Reyrolle continued to grow, seeing a number of mergers. Most notably with C.A Parsons in 1968 and Rolls Royce in 1989. The Hebburn site is now owned by Siemens who acquired the company in 2005.
This photograph shows construction at A.Reyrolle & Co. Ltd in Hebburn on 26 March 1919.

A view from the sky over the southeast wing of Dublin shows a scene that has not only changed but changed utterly! We haven't visited the "Monkey" Morgan Collection for some time and this is a cracker of a shot to show us just how interesting they can be. I'm curious about the apparent running track on the bottom right - Shelbourne Park perhaps?

Description: Morning Mary has a special affection for Thomas Wynne and his collection of photographs. The first of the Wynne images posted here was an albumen print as is this one. After emigrating to the US where his wife died leaving him with a child he returned to Ireland and founded a photographing dynasty with his many children scattering throughout the country and continuing the family profession. Main Street, Ballinrobe looks so quiet and remote in this image and the almost pink shading really gives the sense of age!

Description: While this may or may not be downtown Ardfert then either that wee building in the square is the smallest Abbey in Ireland or the Krazy Kataloguers have been at it again. Wherever we may be the scene is pleasant, seemingly warm, certainly dry and the photographer was the centre of attention - if only for the time it took to take the photograph.

Description: An imperial plate of a painting in the National Gallery of Ireland just around the corner from the Library. Description: A neighbour was a lighthouse keeper and that could be quite a lonely occupation but at least the lighthouses were on terra firma. What was it like to be a light keeper in a lightship? The Fastnet wasn't going anywhere once the tower had been built but those things could shift or even lose their moorings and take off which was likely to be in a storm. They were great men!

Description: A photograph that Mr. O'Dea would have been jealous of, Clifden station taken on an Imperial plate with lots of station staff to watch the operation. On a weekend with very low temperatures it's good to contemplate days where heavy coats and jackets are surplus to requirements and there is warmth in the air! Clifden in the summer would fit the bill and so we can look with envy at the people waiting to board the train to go somewhere nice and pleasant.

Description: Johnny Roche had a tower with a tree on top,
he loved to dance and never stop,
He lived in Cork near the corner shop,
But why has he got a tree on top!
It has come to the weekend and it's cold outside. At the top of the link to this image on the NLI is a reference to a composition by Peader Kearney entitled "Johnny whack fol the diddle" and so that dreadful verse above. Hopefully the Beachcomber will be able to improve on it with a suitable Limerick?

Description: The Krazy Katalogger was at it again, too much sauce over the weekend transformed the "Tubbernaltha Holy Well" into the "Subhemaltha Holy Well". Fortunately the act of cataloguing took place long ago and much higher standards apply now!
Tubbernaltha Holy Well in Sligo had sufficient standing for Mr. French to make the journey and take the trouble to record it for posterity. I note a shiny bottle complete with high cork on the stonework and hopefully that was for holy water and not for the dreaded sauce?

Description: In the early 1950's the concept of a roof like this on a church in rural Ireland would have been quite the subject of discussion. The opinions would have been mixed no doubt with pro's and con's but as it is well on the way in this O'Dea image the argument has been won! I wonder what it looks like now?
I hope you all got over the travails of Halloween? If you've become a Zombie or Vampire we look forward with interest to your contributions from that different point of view;-D

Description: A gallant gentleman poses with the Four Gallans on his land. Mr. John Moran appears proud of his connection to the land and the ancient history it contains.. Where did the word "Gallans" come from and are they all still standing or have they been sacrificed to progress. I had occasion last weekend to visit Lough Gur in County Limerick and that area has a lot of stone age and later artifacts and clearly some have been lost over the years due to a lack of appreciation of what they were and what they symbolised!

Description: The title of this image from the amazing Irish Tourism Association Collection is
"
Druids circle at Lissivigeen - The Two Gallans.". At first sight one might think it was the two ruffians standing patiently for the work to be finished but no it would appear to relate to the stone's. What is the story?

Description: With the arrival of yet another King Charles on the throne of England a reminder of his predecessors nemesis will keep us all grounded? Cromwell's reputation in the UK is one thing while his reputation on this island is quite a different matter. To find a tree known as "Cromwell's tree" in Co. Cork might be no surprise but was it there for him to find shade of to dangle?

Description: A really charming image of a sunny day on this wet and windy morning to cheer us all up - that is apart from the Beachcomber - who can only wish for one:-) The village pump in Gorey is the tittle and no doubt the pump is in there but look at all that is on the street? Cars, petrol pump, people just standing and sitting about, a motorcycle and a petrol pump!

Description: Once upon a time this was Ireland's one and only toll bridge but that went out the door some time ago. Nowadays the owners don't even bother to collect the money, you have to go and pay them or it gets more and more expensive. Is the toll bridge in Fiddown still there and is it still tolled if it is?

Description: Given the wonderful command of language and the many great writers it has produced four Poets in Kerry should hardly have been that much cause for celebration? The Four Poets Memorial in Killarney seems to have focused on some of their muses from long ago and that would be a worthwhile exercise as there are so many today those might be lost in the many?

Description: This is a joy of a photo which was commissioned by Mr. Mathews of Newrath, Waterford in 1922. We want to find the location of the nice house. We want to discover the names of the three people in the garden. But most importantly of all we want to see a streetview of the house with two giant Monkey Puzzle trees in the front garden!

Description: We are off to Wexford to peruse the Crimean war memorial there. Florence Nightingale said of the war “Beggars in the streets of London were at that time leading the lives of princes, compared to the life of our soldiers in the Crimea when I arrived on the scene with thirty-six nurses”. Tennyson in his famous poem said “Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die”.
What a terrible time it must have been!

Description: We have a photo from the Tourist Association of a Carved font at Clonard, believed to be from the 13th Century. I see that "the earliest baptismal fonts were designed for full immersion, and were often cross-shaped with steps (usually three, for the Trinity) leading down into them" I wonder when this type of font was widely introduced?
