This vintage view of the Minster from Friary Lane is quite interesting as it shows a level crossing over the Hull to Scarborough line where there is now a footbridge. The railway came to Beverley in 1846, courtesy of the Hull and Selby Railway Company, which belonged to George Hudson, the Railway King. At this time the road was part of Chantry Lane, but was renamed Friars Lane in 1928. The station was built on land known as the Trinities, on the site of a medieval hospital. Behind the wall on the right is the Dominican Friary.

A. Reyrolle & Co. Ltd was founded by Alphonse Reyrolle (1864 - 1919), a French engineer who established a small switchgear shop in London in 1886. In 1901 his business moved to Hebburn and the firm began to grow with the recruitment of Henry Clothier. Clothier helped them develop large switchgears for power stations, a product the company became famous for.
Over the years, Reyrolle continued to grow, seeing a number of mergers. Most notably with C.A Parsons in 1968 and Rolls Royce in 1989. The Hebburn site is now owned by Siemens who acquired the company in 2005.
This photograph shows construction at A.Reyrolle & Co. Ltd in Hebburn on 26 March 1919.

As it was a busy industrial city, Dnipropetovsk also provided a rich urban setting for the development of a large and active Jewish community. Jewish workers were involved in numerous trades in the city, but Jewish life extended beyond the shop walls. Dnipropetovsk was home to several synagogues as well as a variety of political and social institutions. During the early 20th century the city was a site of much political action amongst Jews aligned with different ideologies such as the Jewish Labor Bund and various Zionist parties. These various political associations frequently had their own networks of clubs, libraries, publications and other support institutions. This book stamp belongs to one such Yidisher Arbeter Klub (Jewish Workers Club), a club associated with the thinker Ber Borokhov whose Labor Zionism fused elements of socialism and Zionism into a single platform. While the Jewish community of Dnipropetrovsk initially bloomed in the years immediately following the Russian Revolution – the forces of repression, collectivization, and famines in the early 1930s diminished the size of the Jewish community. The once thriving Jewish community of Dnipropetrovsk, and its surrounding agricultural regions, was destroyed in the invasion by Nazi forces. This stamp remains testament to the flourishing of Jewish political life that had once taken place in that city.
This book stamp is from a book looted by the Nazis and sorted by Colonel Seymour Pomrenze, one of “the Monuments Men,” at the Offenbach Archival Depot.
There are two scrapbooks of archival markings from the books sorted at the Offenbach Depot in the Seymour Pomrenze Collection held by the American Jewish Historical Society (Call number P-933) There is a finding aid for the collection here The digitized scrapbooks are available here and here.

Description: A "Disney" style castle in Rosturk, Co. Mayo looks like it's leaning to the Clare side but perhaps Mr. French was "ar meisce"? It's amazing how many of these follies appear to have been built in an attempt to create a time long past. This is clearly somebodies extravagant expenditure on a building to make themselves look important - but perhaps Morrning Mary is just being cynical???

Description: Were this image in full living colour it would be 50 shades of green with a sprinkling of grey and perhaps blue from the bridge and the water. Given the fuzziness of the herbiage I suspect that the photographer was blessed with a breeze to keep him cool while setting up and taking the shot. But Tubbernasplink? Cavan is a county with a rich variety of names for townlands and places and this is one of the more curious ones.

Description: A very early one from Mr. O'Dea on what appears to have been a lovely sunny day as he strolled along the banks of the Royal Canal. Not sure when Brendan Behan, who was born 100 years ago and who wrote/made the song famous, was in the 'Joy but the sounds of the Auld Triangle, rung or sung, would have jarred with the peacefulness of the scene!

Description: Knockdrin Castle in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath looks like an childs version of a castle. Lots of towers with lots of fancy castellation on top but of dubious defensive value? That gate looks like it was the entrance to another fortress that was retained when fancy Dan was built. It certainly doesn't control access to the castle.

Description: Back in action after Irelands first ever Bank Holiday celebration of Féile lá le Bríde (The festival of St. Brigids Day) or even Imbolg the ancient Celtic name for the first day of Spring! And what better way to mark a new beginning than with the image of a happy couple on their wedding day? Just after the end of the dreadful Emergency in Ireland and the Second World War everywhere else white dresses and dress suits were out of the reach of most people and so the ladies wear Costumes and hats while the men wear the good suits! Commissioned by Mr. William Ward of New Ross we can hope that they had a long and happy life together!

Description: For many years we have been fascinated with the wonderful work on the pages of the Book of Kells but here we have the Cross of Kells with it's own wonderful work. We have been intrigued by the symbolism on paintings and sculptures in many countries and here is a fine stone Celtic cross with a great array of features. Those at the base would be a good place to start?
Morning Mary had a few minutes to spare in Dublin yesterday and called in to the NLI Photographic Archive in Temple Bar. There the exhibition "PEOPLE AND PLACES" is on display and well worth a visit!

Description: While all the Mary's at one time or another have passed this castle it is probable that none has been inside! A well know feature on the North side of Dublin which has been the scene of at least one pop stars nuptials. The only thing this Mary knows about the family after whom the castle is named is that one of their ancestors played a significant and treacherous role in the defeat of the Jacobite army at the battle of Aughrim!

Description: The Piltown Co-Operative Agriculture and Dairy Society looks like it was well up and running in May of 1925 almost 100 years ago. The Co-Ops made a massive contribution to the development of rural Ireland and conditions for the people. One wonders what was happening that prompted them to commission this photograph from the Poole Studio?

Description: St. John's Point, which the Krazy Kataloguers have placed in Donegal, is in fact resting below the Mountains of Mourne on the opposite side of the island near Newcastle in County Down. Down is one of the most beautiful parts of the island with golden beaches, wonderful seascapes and great hills to explore and climb.
But in fact the Kataloguers were correct and there is a St. John's Lighthouse in County Donegal also. This photograph is of the Donegal version.

Description: Usually the Eason photos are really good shots showing great detail and evoking a response in the viewer but this image does nothing for Morning Mary. The Great Southern Hotel, once the jewel in the crown of hotels in the south of Ireland can be seen but only just while the lovely background of hills looks dull and dreary. Now please tell us how the image could have been improved?

Description: O'Connell Street in Sligo with lots of people, including the driver of the horse and cart, are standing about looking at the photographer as he goes about his work! Interestingly the dress of many of the adults could be from right up to the late '50's while the children's and lack of motorised transport would indicate much earlier.
Well done on all the great work yesterday with the Butlers of Kilkenny, it was a joy to follow the story unfold!

A lovely scene with trams (electric), flags on high and ladies in the latest fashions. If yesterday's image showed where the city had changed utterly then today's is surely changed even more with very few of the establishments there or if they are looking the same.

Description: Morning Mary has a special affection for Thomas Wynne and his collection of photographs. The first of the Wynne images posted here was an albumen print as is this one. After emigrating to the US where his wife died leaving him with a child he returned to Ireland and founded a photographing dynasty with his many children scattering throughout the country and continuing the family profession. Main Street, Ballinrobe looks so quiet and remote in this image and the almost pink shading really gives the sense of age!

Description: While this may or may not be downtown Ardfert then either that wee building in the square is the smallest Abbey in Ireland or the Krazy Kataloguers have been at it again. Wherever we may be the scene is pleasant, seemingly warm, certainly dry and the photographer was the centre of attention - if only for the time it took to take the photograph.

An unusual one I imagine with a strange scene that clearly was not witnessed by the artist. Men in armour, long sharp spears, castles on the hill and dead and dying in the foreground. Description: A neighbour was a lighthouse keeper and that could be quite a lonely occupation but at least the lighthouses were on terra firma. What was it like to be a light keeper in a lightship? The Fastnet wasn't going anywhere once the tower had been built but those things could shift or even lose their moorings and take off which was likely to be in a storm. They were great men!

Description: The fascination with the Fastnet Rock continues with an different photo for the end of the week. The Krazy Kataloguer describes this as an "Aerial View" of the SS Irene docked at the Fastnet but I imagine that "Aerial" is a bit of a stretch. This was clearly taken from high up on the column of the light.

Description: A photograph that Mr. O'Dea would have been jealous of, Clifden station taken on an Imperial plate with lots of station staff to watch the operation. On a weekend with very low temperatures it's good to contemplate days where heavy coats and jackets are surplus to requirements and there is warmth in the air! Clifden in the summer would fit the bill and so we can look with envy at the people waiting to board the train to go somewhere nice and pleasant.

Description: Johnny Roche had a tower with a tree on top,
he loved to dance and never stop,
He lived in Cork near the corner shop,
But why has he got a tree on top!
It has come to the weekend and it's cold outside. At the top of the link to this image on the NLI is a reference to a composition by Peader Kearney entitled "Johnny whack fol the diddle" and so that dreadful verse above. Hopefully the Beachcomber will be able to improve on it with a suitable Limerick?

Description: We normally associate those timber framed buildings with the Elizabethan era but there is also an abundance of faux Elizabethan about and this must be one of those. Having said that this railway station is more attractive than most. Portrush is in one of the most beautiful parts of the world and it is easy to see why people would use the train to go there.

Description: After our visit to Trinity College yesterday we felt so uplifted that we had to go all Imperial today! So here we are with a fine Imperial Plate showing Milford House in Co. Armagh. The house itself is obviously for human habitation but that little "Tigín" down at the water was thoughtfully provided for the resident Leprechauns - but only if you believe in them?

Description: This happy group, standing on a dodgy looking platform, are reviewing Trinity College students at College Park as they prepare for war. Was that the forthcoming War of Independence of the Great War? The names here are all familiar to those with an interest in Irish history and some with less savoury reputations.
Our title is a nod to Frank McGuinness's play "Observe the sons of Ulster marching towards the Somme!

Description: Morning Mary has a special affection for this image as this is where she learned to swim. A popular place for picnicking close to the town of Ballina and no doubt a lively salmon river as well. When she was there it was not nearly as lively as it is in this shot as it was high summer and the waters were low.

Description: Dalkey Town Hall beside the Queens Hotel is the subject of todays image from the ubiquitous Lawrence Collection. The little castle seems to be an unlikely Town Hall but obviously was a good strong structure and was available? I love the bread cart outside the gates and the donkey hoping for a slice or two of bread.

Description: In the early 1950's the concept of a roof like this on a church in rural Ireland would have been quite the subject of discussion. Description: A gallant gentleman poses with the Four Gallans on his land. Mr. John Moran appears proud of his connection to the land and the ancient history it contains.. Where did the word "Gallans" come from and are they all still standing or have they been sacrificed to progress. I had occasion last weekend to visit Lough Gur in County Limerick and that area has a lot of stone age and later artifacts and clearly some have been lost over the years due to a lack of appreciation of what they were and what they symbolised!

Nowadays the owners don't even bother to collect the money, you have to go and pay them or it gets more and more expensive. Is the toll bridge in Fiddown still there and is it still tolled if it is?
