It was designed as practice for how to evacuate the city of Kingston upon Hull, East Yorkshire, in the event of a catastrophic incident and involved volunteers, as well as civil defence and emergency personnel, being 'evacuated' via a bus convoy and across the River Humber on the old ferries. Library of the Kiev Branch of the Society for the Promotion of Culture among the Jews of Russia 1570
Description: Library of the Kiev Branch of the Society for the Promotion of Culture among the Jews of Russia. 1570. The Society for the Promotion of Culture among the Jews of Russia was a civic and educational association founded in Saint Petersburg in 1863 by prominent and wealthy Russian Jews, with Joseph Yohel Günzburg as its most well-known co-founder and president . It attempted to educate and acculturate the Jews of Russia by providing assistance to Jewish students at Russian universities, encouraging publication and authorship of books relating to Judaism, and helping Jewish libraries, among other projects. They also wanted Jews to move away from speaking Yiddish and toward speaking Russian. It started out with weak membership, but interest in it grew among Jews after the pogroms of the 1880s. Branches were founded across the Russian Empire, with the most important in Moscow, Riga, Kiev, and especially Odessa. The organization was forced to close in 1929 due to the Soviet policy of closing independent political and cultural organizations. This branch was located in Kiev. This book stamp is from a book looted by the Nazis and sorted by Colonel Seymour Pomrenze, one of “the Monuments Men,” at the Offenbach Archival Depot. There are two scrapbooks of archival markings from the books sorted at the Offenbach Depot in the Seymour Pomrenze Collection held by the American Jewish Historical Society (Call number P-933) There is a finding aid for the collection here The digitized scrapbooks are available here and here. Unusually not as crisp and clear as so many Stereo Pairs images we have seen nonetheless this is a very interesting and quite charming shot. The lady on the right looks downright uncomfortable in her pose while the lady at the rear looks like a reluctant participant. Description: To a fine Stereo Pairs image of a Gothic church someplace in the country that appears to be newly built. It may be very irreverent but these grim buildings remind me more of places of incarceration rather than places of consolation and worship! Up the back of the book or Domnach Airgid - Sunday Silver?
Description: One of the sure things about the Mason Collection is that there will always be a surprise around the corner. Clandeboye is very handy boy!
Description: Clandeboye is one of those names that many Irish people will be familiar with but will not know where it comes from or what it looks like so here is a little insight. This fine manorial house standing in rolling, wooded countryside would appear to be either called Clandeboye or be in a place of that name? Our image of Howth Abbey went to Explore over the weekend so thank you all for your input and research! Babes, bikes and buckets on Barrack Street in Boyle!
Description: Before I am lynched for describing ladies as "Babes" remember that Morning Mary is allowed a certain amount of artistic licence! A very busy scene on Barrack Street with ladies in hatorific confections, gentleman walking his bike, donkey carts moving and parked while a hackney stands waiting for his fare. Plane crash Katherine River, 22 January 1939
Description: Guinea Airways Limited plane, Lockheed 14H, VH-ABI, Koranga, after crash into the Katherine River, Northern Territory, Australia, 22 January 1939. State Library of New South Wales, collection.sl.nsw.gov.au/.../Yj7ojW49/bO8RwP8kV6O4r On the morning of 18 January 1939 Captain C. R. Clarke had been forced to wait until the heavy downpour of rain eased before he could taxi onto the Katherine Aerodrome runway. He and the other 3 members of the crew were destined for Adelaide but as the plane started its take-off run down the rain-sodden ground it was clear they were in trouble. From his office at the aerodrome, Flying Doctor, Clyde Fenton, watched as the plane took off. Seeing it clear the fence at the end of the runway by less than a metre he immediately knew it was in serious trouble. As he watched the plane plummeted from the sky and he heard a "Final terrific crash, then utter silence”. The Guinea Airways Limited plane had gone head-first into the nearby Katherine River and although Fenton was quick to get to the site, he was unable to save the four occupants. These images were taken by the Sun newspaper four days after the event. "Four Killed When Guinea Airways' 'Plane Crashes At Katherine River". Naval manoeuvres on the Galway Mayo border!
Description: What a fantastic photograph from the Lawrence organisation, we are looking out on Irelands only fjord commonly known as Killary Harbour one of only three fjords in Ireland the other two being Carlingford Lough and Lough Swilly. I see the water is flat calm which anyone who knows the area will tell you is a rare occurrence indeed. We have come across Royal visits to this area before, but this looks more like a naval exercise? I am really looking forward to reading your findings on this one.
