The First Jewish Workers Club in Yekaterinoslav
Description: As it was a busy industrial city, Dnipropetovsk also provided a rich urban setting for the development of a large and active Jewish community. Jewish workers were involved in numerous trades in the city, but Jewish life extended beyond the shop walls. Dnipropetovsk was home to several synagogues as well as a variety of political and social institutions. During the early 20th century the city was a site of much political action amongst Jews aligned with different ideologies such as the Jewish Labor Bund and various Zionist parties. These various political associations frequently had their own networks of clubs, libraries, publications and other support institutions. This book stamp belongs to one such Yidisher Arbeter Klub (Jewish Workers Club), a club associated with the thinker Ber Borokhov whose Labor Zionism fused elements of socialism and Zionism into a single platform. While the Jewish community of Dnipropetrovsk initially bloomed in the years immediately following the Russian Revolution – the forces of repression, collectivization, and famines in the early 1930s diminished the size of the Jewish community. The once thriving Jewish community of Dnipropetrovsk, and its surrounding agricultural regions, was destroyed in the invasion by Nazi forces. This stamp remains testament to the flourishing of Jewish political life that had once taken place in that city. This book stamp is from a book looted by the Nazis and sorted by Colonel Seymour Pomrenze, one of “the Monuments Men,” at the Offenbach Archival Depot. There are two scrapbooks of archival markings from the books sorted at the Offenbach Depot in the Seymour Pomrenze Collection held by the American Jewish Historical Society (Call number P-933) There is a finding aid for the collection here The digitized scrapbooks are available here and here. 18-footer ARGO (ex HC PRESS III) in front of SCEGS boatshed
Description: The original boatshed for Sydney Church of England Grammar School, or Shore School, was situated at Berry's Bay. The school acquired its own boatshed in Looking Glass Bay in 1919, presented to them by Mr Russell Sinclair, in memory of his son. This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s William Hall collection. The Hall collection combines photographs from both William J Hall and his father William Frederick Hall - the latter of which is likely to have taken this image. The images provide an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour, from the 1890s to the 1930s – from large racing and cruising yachts, to the many and varied skiffs jostling on the harbour, to the new phenomenon of motor boating in the early twentieth century. The collection also includes studio portraits and images of the many spectators and crowds who followed the sailing races. The Australian National Maritime Museum undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection. If you can identify a person, vessel or landmark, write the details in the Comments box below. Thank you for helping caption this important historical image. Object number 00002114

Landsfengselet for kvinner (tidl.
Arkivreferanse: Riksarkivet, S-1043Ua6_033r

Description: It may be hard for many who know the modern city of Dublin to realise that many of today's suburbs were once villages in their own right. Walk the plank in 2024?
Description: To start this new year we have a photograph rather than a plate from the wonderful Lawrence Collection. Looking down on Waterford city where the times they are a changing with Steam and Sail both in evidence on the water. The gangways lead onto the steam ship while the sailing ship is a little further away but they have to settle for the more precarious plank. Floating in Alexandra's Basin
Description: As a child I remember wondering why somebody whose name was Alexandra had a basin in Dublin, and why it was mentioned in the news. Today I can see that nobody was going to throw the baby in the basin out with the bath water. Ready to get her bottom wet!
Description: Continuing with the maritime theme of yesterday but this time way up north in the County of Donegal. The "Fort Aengus" is kitted out and made ready for her life as a fishing trawler. The Title on the image says that she is at sea with passengers but she is clearly still in the stocks and has not yet floated off. At that time Killybegs was the centre of an active boat building industry and the fishing fleet was expanding rapidly although the abuse of Irish fish stocks by foreign trawlers was ramping up. One of our great failures was to give away control of the fishing in Irish waters on our access to the EEC! Definitely treading on the territory of Mr. Poole but he has managed to capture a sense of stillness and contemplation even if it was only for the camera! The grave in the centre of the lawn looks relatively recent which may or may not be an indicator of the date the photo was taken? High Noon on Wellington Street
Description: A fine Imperial Plate of a pretty deserted Wellington Street in Ballymena, County Antrim seems to be rather a waste, unless you are an admirer of horse apples? The street is not entirely deserted. On the top left, a man is giving a demonstration of a stance very seldom seen nowadays. He has his hands across his back and inside his jacket, which I always believed came from the wearing of tails? Resting after a job well done?
Description: When you can fill a gap in one fell swoop, why not take the opportunity? Mr. Sampson of Downpatrick, while building a drystone wall, pulled this rock out of the ground and filled a great big gap, saving him a whole lot of digging and lifting!! Well, he probably built the wall up on either side of the rock and used it in situ, but now he can rest after his labours! The Commissioners of Irish Lights team at work using a centuries old method for raising and lowering loads in difficult terrain. De de de deja vu again and again???
Description: As you can see from the photo and the title we have visited this location many times before BUT if Research Mary has chosen this one then there must be a good reason? One might be that the image is on an Imperial Plate which means that one can almost read Daniel O'Connell's thoughts. Seculareligious
Description: A visit to the lovely Clonbrock Collection and on the day that Storm Debi is battering the country, we have a lovely image of summer with an elegantly dressed lady complete with wide-brimmed hat and parasol sitting on a lawn! Description: If the information that I was taught in my schooldays is correct then it is approx. 300 miles from Mizen to Malin, or the length of the island of Ireland. If you wish to find it on the map don't fall for a straightforward "Kilmurry" because Clare has a collection of them. Final resting place
Description: The Great and the Good gather at the graveside of the little man in the top hat with the gentle smile, as many of us will remember the late President Seán T. O'Kelly who died in 1966. Dignitaries of the church are there aplenty to honour a man whose commitment to the church was always evident. His political friends are present but I find it hard to identify any from the other parties but that might be a lack of knowledge of who might have been there. Bumps for her birthday suit?
Description: "BLANKETING MRS. O'NEILL" a strange image from the Mason Photographic Collection. A circle of Scottish soldiers in their traditional kilts, caubeens and tartan socks bouncing a naked lady on a blanket seems like great sport for the soldiers. The onlooking lady and gent likewise seem amused though the lady seems rather more preoccupied? Given Mason's history of illustrated talks and presentations there must be a story behind the image? Horse power from Campbell
Description: We have visited many of Irelands Lighthouses over the years, but I do not think we have ever been to the one at Roche’s Point.
