Library of the Kiev Branch of the Society for the Promotion of Culture among the Jews of Russia 1570
Description: Library of the Kiev Branch of the Society for the Promotion of Culture among the Jews of Russia. 1570. The Society for the Promotion of Culture among the Jews of Russia was a civic and educational association founded in Saint Petersburg in 1863 by prominent and wealthy Russian Jews, with Joseph Yohel Günzburg as its most well-known co-founder and president . It attempted to educate and acculturate the Jews of Russia by providing assistance to Jewish students at Russian universities, encouraging publication and authorship of books relating to Judaism, and helping Jewish libraries, among other projects. They also wanted Jews to move away from speaking Yiddish and toward speaking Russian. It started out with weak membership, but interest in it grew among Jews after the pogroms of the 1880s. Branches were founded across the Russian Empire, with the most important in Moscow, Riga, Kiev, and especially Odessa. The organization was forced to close in 1929 due to the Soviet policy of closing independent political and cultural organizations. This branch was located in Kiev. This book stamp is from a book looted by the Nazis and sorted by Colonel Seymour Pomrenze, one of “the Monuments Men,” at the Offenbach Archival Depot. There are two scrapbooks of archival markings from the books sorted at the Offenbach Depot in the Seymour Pomrenze Collection held by the American Jewish Historical Society (Call number P-933) There is a finding aid for the collection here The digitized scrapbooks are available here and here. Description: Library and Reading Room of the Welfare Society of Poor Jews of the City of Melitopol. Prior to the outbreak of WWII, Melitopol had a large and active Jewish community, which explains this bookstamp belonging to a Jewish charitable organization. Melitopol was occupied by the German army in 1941, and was not retaken by the Soviet army until November 1943. This book stamp is from a book looted by the Nazis and sorted by Colonel Seymour Pomrenze, one of “the Monuments Men,” at the Offenbach Archival Depot. Unveiling of 'The London School of Economics' British Rail Electric Locomotive, Euston Station, 3 October 1985
Description: Huw Wheldon The naming of the locomotive was the initiative of two former LSE students, Jonathan Bray and Christopher Zarebski of the Students’ Union Transport Society. They had proposed that LSE be commemorated in this way back in January 1985. Taking their idea to Professor Michael Wise, then pro-director, he not only supported their proposal, but assisted with contacting the chief of operations of British Rail Board, Maurice Holmes. The locomotive was named in recognition of the large number of student passengers who used British Rail, following the launch of the Young Persons Railcard. Sir Huw Wheldon unveiled the nameplate on a British Rail electric locomotive at Euston Station in 1985. Since February 2008 the nameplate has hung in the George IV pub on the LSE campus, after it was acquired by the school in an auction in 2007. Where Art and Learning combine
Description: I just used Google Translate to find out what "Qui sint heli" actually meant so that I might be taken for a latin scholar but am not impressed with the answer! Who is Eli? And then reading it perhaps it is correct and Eli = Elijah and each line asks the same question about different biblical characters? What do you think? Description: An elaborate series of constructions across the River Moy at Ballina must have cost a fortune at the time and all to catch the mighty Atlantic Salmon - the "King of Fish"! As a child spending school holidays in Ballina Morning Mary's memories of fishing in Ballina was of men rowing out with their nets in a loop. On return to the shore they hauled their nets in and always seemed to have a plentiful supply of big silver salmon which were then bludgeoned to death and placed in boxes. The pictured set-up seems so much more sophisticated than that! Amerikkay over the way
Description: For those living on Ireland's west coast over the millennia cliffs such as these must have appeared as if they were living on the edge of the world! Anyone for tennis?
Description: Tennis in long trousers could be uncomfortable at times but tennis in long skirts would be uncomfortable all of the time! At least that is Morning Mary's experience in these matters and playing rugby in long skirts is virtually impossible:-) This seems to be a very early O'Connor image and was taken on a very fine day in the beautiful town of Ballycastle in Co. Antrim. Congratulations to all our contributors for yesterdays account of Most Rev. Dr. Collier and on being "Explored"! Hats off for the Bishop
Description: This portrait of Most Reverend Dr. Collier DD, Bishop of Ossory is a little reminder of how much has changed in Ireland over the centuries. Ferns, Ossory, Cashel even Armagh while once centres of great influence are today very much smaller centres with a long history. Most of us would have difficulty even locating Ossory the Bishop was obviously pleased to be there and the Man in Charge! Photographer: A. H. Looking in and looking out
Description: The Guesthouse, Mount Saint Joseph's, Roscrea is todays image. When I was scanning our list to see what should be posted I saw the catalogue number beginning with "L_IMP" denoting an Imperial sized glass plate I just had to post it. We have had very few Emperor sized plate to post here and I look forward to scanning the detail in this fine shot. Description: The Bay, Woodford, Co. Galway for today's image with a lady (a maid) looking out the bay window of the house on the far side of the water. The house is very close to the water and must have been vulnerable to winter/spring/summer/autumn floods? Oh or Ah Voca it's still a jewel in a green crown
Description: Whether it's called Ovoca or Avoca or even Ballykissangel the little village remains a charming and beautiful place in the heart of Co. Wicklow. Mr. French chose a nice quiet time to visit with traffic down to the minimum, just Neddy and his driver as a little bit of local colour. I brought some American visitors there once who wanted to see Ballykissangel and they had binge watched the entire series several times. For them the visit was a highlight! Airship Wreck - Appalling Disaster
Description: The darned cataloguers in the NLI have been at it again! Understated elegance in Hazelwood
Description: This squared off block of a house could almost be ugly yet it has an understated elegance, a sense of solidity and of comfort to it! Sligo is one of the least appreciated counties in Ireland and to ask many young people they would mention the surfing while older people might mention Yeats but it has so much more to offer. The views around the county are spectacular, the mountains may not be very high but are full of history and the welcome is warm. It is easy to see why the residents of Hazelwood chose to live there! View from St.Mary's tower, Beverley 1909 (archive ref PO-1-14-226)
Description: (Buy exclusive prints of this image from East Riding Photos) View from St.Mary’s Church tower of Beverley and the Minster looking from the north west. The large building and its chimney is the Golden Ball Brewery, which was off Toll Gavel. In 1695, the making of malt and oatmeal and the tanning of leather became the three main trades of Beverley. A brewer named Robert Stephenson bought the Brewery in 1797, it became a long established family firm, brewing reduced and production ended after his death in 1919.
