Friary Lane, Beverley, c.1865 (archive ref PH-4-7)
Description: (Buy exclusive historic East Yorkshire prints from East Riding Photos http://picturearchivesorg/eastridingphotos) This vintage view of the Minster from Friary Lane is quite interesting as it shows a level crossing over the Hull to Scarborough line where there is now a footbridge. The railway came to Beverley in 1846, courtesy of the Hull and Selby Railway Company, which belonged to George Hudson, the Railway King. At this time the road was part of Chantry Lane, but was renamed Friars Lane in 1928. The station was built on land known as the Trinities, on the site of a medieval hospital. Behind the wall on the right is the Dominican Friary. Well, well, well!
Description: The Krazy Katalogger was at it again, too much sauce over the weekend transformed the "Tubbernaltha Holy Well" into the "Subhemaltha Holy Well". Fortunately the act of cataloguing took place long ago and much higher standards apply now! Tubbernaltha Holy Well in Sligo had sufficient standing for Mr. French to make the journey and take the trouble to record it for posterity. I note a shiny bottle complete with high cork on the stonework and hopefully that was for holy water and not for the dreaded sauce? The wings of a dove?
Description: In the early 1950's the concept of a roof like this on a church in rural Ireland would have been quite the subject of discussion. The opinions would have been mixed no doubt with pro's and con's but as it is well on the way in this O'Dea image the argument has been won! I wonder what it looks like now? A Gallant and Four Gallans
Description: A gallant gentleman poses with the Four Gallans on his land. Mr. John Moran appears proud of his connection to the land and the ancient history it contains.. Where did the word "Gallans" come from and are they all still standing or have they been sacrificed to progress. I had occasion last weekend to visit Lough Gur in County Limerick and that area has a lot of stone age and later artifacts and clearly some have been lost over the years due to a lack of appreciation of what they were and what they symbolised! Description: A rare visit to the Dublin Trams Collection to see this lovely photograph. When we talk trams and particularly Dublin trams it always surprises me that the network was so extensive. Nine Dean(s) NOT DEAN it's DENN
Description: My oh my but the Dean family from Waterside in Waterford scrubbed up well for the family portrait. They all look quite serious but comfortable in their own skin. Morning Mary is particularly taken by the Missus, she looks like the kind of woman who ran an efficient but loving household. From Pat Kelly zbjzatlw83 They are the Denn family not Dean. Photo was indeed 1946. My mother’s family. Grandad was actually the cook in St Otteran’s Hospital, and after retiring was Commissionaire in the Olympia Ballroom. My grandmother May Denn née Rolleston won the Championship of all Ireland in Irish Dancing in the August 1917 Oireachtas. Thomas Ashe played the pipes for her in his last public performance before his arrest and death on hunger strike. Éamon de Valera, fresh from election as MP for East Clare, presented Nanny with her gold medal. All nationalist Ireland’s leaders were there including these two surviving Commandants from 1916 Rising, of 5 Brigade and 3 Brigade Dublin. This photo was the last time all our family were together, the occasion being Bill top left in photo emigrating. Aunt Phyllis, bottom left, died July 1948 of leukaemia. That’s my mother Patricia in the white blouse, she became a computer operator in 1957 in America, later worked in admin in what is now the IEEE. This project is wonderful. Photographer: A. H. A cure for what ails ye!
Description: Down the centuries the folk have had cures for all kinds of ailments. Some good, some bad and some were downright bizarre! This cure surely falls into the bizarre category. The title on the image in the Library is The Bishops Skull used to cure whooping cough.. Whooping cough was a terrible disease among children and most distressing for the parents and families of the tots who suffered and oftentimes died. What can we find out about the Bishop and where is his skull now? Vandalism on a grand scale?
Description: The late and lovely Elinor went out in her waterproofs to get this image of a piece of destruction -or progress, depending on you point of view. From Larne to Bantry without leaving home!
Description: Finding the meaning of Irish place names has become quite the blood sport with books, social media threads and TV programmes feeding those hungry followers. So what does "Ardnagashel" mean? My interpretation would be The heights of the Castle but that can hardly be right down by the seashore with hardly a hill in sight. The two men standing in the foreground would have been a great addition had the one in the light coloured trousers stood still for a few seconds. Looking down on Larne
Description: An interesting one from the great Monkey Morgan today where he flies over the port town of Larne in Co. Antrim. At a time when a strict border control was in place a commission north of the border must have been a rarity? I imagine that Larne has changed a great deal since 1955 with the advent of "Roll on - Roll off" ferries, the greater proliferation of motor cars and the rise in trade the town and port must have changed enormously. The castle on the hill
Description: Those of us who travelled the old N7 over many years will have been familiar with the ruin of a castle dominating the skyline outside Portlaoise. Signs indicated that this was the Castle of Dunamaise and I often wondered at the story behind it. It's position appeared to be strategically perfect, dominating the relatively flat lands of the nearby counties, that we wondered why it had never been restored by a local landlord or robber baron. Today we have an image of a drawing/print from the Mason Collection with the title "Grose: Queen's County - Dunamase Castle ruins Photographer: Thomas H. We are Recess(ing) again! to Finny, Co. Mayo
Description: We were in Recess last week on an Imperial visit and today we are gone all Republican with Mr. O'Dea. This church and car look rather dated but both have welcoming open doors. The design of the church is rather bizarre, a mix of neo somethingorother and Turkish Baths. Has it survived or did some kind soul put it out of it's misery? EDIT This church is not in Recess it is the church of the Immaculate Conception, Finny, Co. Mayo, well done to Bernard Healy for finding the location. Photographer: James P. O'Dea Collection:James P. They even brought a piper to the party
Description: Dr. Tully's house after the eviction where the Police, Military, bailiffs and Emergency Men came to throw a family out on the street. From the slates torn from the roof, the thorn bushes pulled from the windows and the assembly close to the house it is clear that the deed has been done. The Scottish soldier in full kilt is surely a piper or drummer whose presence looks off given the circumstances? We have been here before so anyone who mentions Deja Vu has been Trumped! Grand grandstands at Kilcohan
Description: The new Grandstands at Kilcohan Park in Waterford before the pitch and sidelines were complete. They may seem a bit on the primitive side today but at that time they were a big improvement and investment. Stadia throughout the world have grown and become more sophisticated with 'all seaters' and Ireland with such beauties as Croke Park, The Aviva, Semple Stadium and Thomond Park but I much preferred the terraces where the sense of comradeship and the banter were so much more memorable! IMPERIAL WEEK - Eden Quay from Bachelors Walk
Description: To conclude our IMPERIAL WEEK we have a partial Imperial Plate with a view from Bachelors Walk along Eden Quay and down river to Dublin Bay. It is such a busy picture that the loss of the bottom left corner really is a pity because of all the detail that has been lost. Thank you all for your many contributions during the week and while we are at it a virtual sticky bun with extra stickiness to Beachcomber Australia for his transformation of "Cabooses" to 'Cabeece". Shadow at the crossroads - dah de dah dah
Description: Those who look askance at the last four 'words' above will be too young to remember the old black and white detective movies of the 1940's and 50's and their atmospheric commentary on the happenings on-screen.
