The White Cross in Ireland
Description: We are given quite a bit of information about this photo from the following handwritten caption "The White Cross in Ireland: (from left to right) Lord Mayor O'Neill of Dublin and the American Committee for Relief in Ireland with Mr. France who went to Ireland in order to alleviate the suffering of the poorer people after the American Red Cross had decided not to help" Our cataloguer also points out the embossed "W.D. Hogan/ 56, Henry S[t.]/ DUBLIN" in the lower right of the photograph. I think it should be possible to find the names of the 6 unidentified men and to get very close to the date it was taken. Zero carbon emissions
Description: A fascinating insight into the world of bicycle racing back in the late 1800's complete with tickets attached to the plate! In the early years of cycling such races were commonplace and attracted crowds and prize money. The obvious differences between then and now are the clothing being worn and the handlebars but the technology has changed enormously. Posters, pinafores and peace in Portaferry Square
Description: "Caoimghin" who is one of our followers is a native of Portaferry and he requested that we visit his home town which we do today. Unusually for Ulster the towns space is called a "Square" rather than a Diamond and it looks like a significant piece of real estate. Are ye right there Michael
Description: Bord na Mona train at Rhode in Co. Offaly is todays shot from Mr. O'Dea (Biddy Mulligan's nephew!) Given that this is out in the middle of a bog it seems unlikely that we will have a streetview? Booking your last bed?
Description: Grim looking as you might expect given the Victorian attitude to death the Graves Office looks even less welcoming than a cemetery! Waiting for Dogo?
Description: I'm afraid I'm going to disappoint those dog seekers among us whose hopes have been raised by the title but I cannot see a dog in this image. Unusually not as crisp and clear as so many Stereo Pairs images we have seen nonetheless this is a very interesting and quite charming shot. The title provided by the cataloguer (they must be constantly on the sauce) is Railway close to shore, Co. Cork and I had great difficulty finding the railway but how they settled on Co. Cork remains to be seen? Description: (Buy exclusive prints of this image from East Riding Photos) This is the Beverley United Band, assembled here on the Westwood in 1910. No doubt they would have supplied the town with a brass chorus of Christmas carols during the festive period. As far as we know, they didn’t include a ‘Sergeant Pepper’ among their number! Description: (Buy exclusive prints of this image from East Riding Photos) View from St.Mary’s Church tower of Beverley and the Minster looking from the north west. The large building and its chimney is the Golden Ball Brewery, which was off Toll Gavel. In 1695, the making of malt and oatmeal and the tanning of leather became the three main trades of Beverley. A brewer named Robert Stephenson bought the Brewery in 1797, it became a long established family firm, brewing reduced and production ended after his death in 1919. 10 footer vessel on Sydney Harbour
Description: This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s William Hall collection. The Hall collection combines photographs from both William J Hall and his father William Frederick Hall. The images provide an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour, from the 1890s to the 1930s – from large racing and cruising yachts, to the many and varied skiffs jostling on the harbour, to the new phenomenon of motor boating in the early twentieth century. The collection also includes studio portraits and images of the many spectators and crowds who followed the sailing races. The Australian National Maritime Museum undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection. If you can identify a person, vessel or landmark, write the details in the Comments box below. Thank you for helping caption this important historical image. Object number 00010564

Last place to fill up before America
Description: Shannon Airport from the air! Monkey Morgan provides us with a fascinating view of Shannon or Rineanna as it was known back then with a selection of propeller driven aircraft on the tarmac and not a jet in sight!
