Baruch Kunstadt Dayan
Description: Rabbi Baruch Kunstadt was born in Pressburg (Bratislava, Slovakia) in 1884 and as a young man he studied in that city’s yeshiva – he was the grandson of Rabbi Lippman Kunstadt. From 1907 to 1939 he was the Av-Beit-Din, Rabbinat’s assessor, in the German city of Fulda, but in 1939 he moved to Jerusalem where, along with Rabbi Yechiel Michel Schlesinger, he helped found the Yeshiva Kol Torah which was the first Charedi Yeshiva to teach in Hebrew as opposed to Yiddish. Rabbi Kunstadt died in Israel in 1967. Though Rabbi Kunstadt escaped Germany with his life, the presence of his bookstamp amongst the books recovered from the Nazis is a testament to the life he was forced to leave behind. Today the Yeshiva Kol Torah remains a prominent institution renowned for its high teaching standards – and Rabbi Kunstadt is still revered as one of the Yeshiva’s founders. This book stamp is from a book looted by the Nazis and sorted by Colonel Seymour Pomrenze, one of “the Monuments Men,” at the Offenbach Archival Depot. There are two scrapbooks of archival markings from the books sorted at the Offenbach Depot in the Seymour Pomrenze Collection held by the American Jewish Historical Society (Call number P-933) There is a finding aid for the collection here The digitized scrapbooks are available here and here. Beverley United Band on Westwood 1910 (archive ref PO-1-14-164)
Description: (Buy exclusive prints of this image from East Riding Photos) This is the Beverley United Band, assembled here on the Westwood in 1910. No doubt they would have supplied the town with a brass chorus of Christmas carols during the festive period. As far as we know, they didn’t include a ‘Sergeant Pepper’ among their number! Library of the Kiev Branch of the Society for the Promotion of Culture among the Jews of Russia 1570
Description: Library of the Kiev Branch of the Society for the Promotion of Culture among the Jews of Russia. 1570. The Society for the Promotion of Culture among the Jews of Russia was a civic and educational association founded in Saint Petersburg in 1863 by prominent and wealthy Russian Jews, with Joseph Yohel Günzburg as its most well-known co-founder and president . It attempted to educate and acculturate the Jews of Russia by providing assistance to Jewish students at Russian universities, encouraging publication and authorship of books relating to Judaism, and helping Jewish libraries, among other projects. They also wanted Jews to move away from speaking Yiddish and toward speaking Russian. It started out with weak membership, but interest in it grew among Jews after the pogroms of the 1880s. Branches were founded across the Russian Empire, with the most important in Moscow, Riga, Kiev, and especially Odessa. The organization was forced to close in 1929 due to the Soviet policy of closing independent political and cultural organizations. This branch was located in Kiev. The collection also includes studio portraits and images of the many spectators and crowds who followed the sailing races. The Australian National Maritime Museum undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection. The White Cross in Ireland
Description: We are given quite a bit of information about this photo from the following handwritten caption "The White Cross in Ireland: (from left to right) Lord Mayor O'Neill of Dublin and the American Committee for Relief in Ireland with Mr. France who went to Ireland in order to alleviate the suffering of the poorer people after the American Red Cross had decided not to help" Our cataloguer also points out the embossed "W.D. Hogan/ 56, Henry S[t.]/ DUBLIN" in the lower right of the photograph. I think it should be possible to find the names of the 6 unidentified men and to get very close to the date it was taken. Quiet time on Shaftesbury Square
Description: We stay in the wee north to start this week and to Shaftesbury Square in the heart of Belfast but as none of us has ever seen it. People are up and about but not too many, some appear to be children but no dogs........yet! I would have said Sunday morning but the loaded wagon at the horse trough would indicate otherwise as Sunday in Belfast tended to be full lock down in those days. Whose lights are fled, whose garlands dead!
Description: This is described as a monastic building in the catalogue but looks more like a fortified residence to this untrained eye. The STP is by far my favourite collection and this fine example with the three wasters chatting on the graves is a particularly fine example. The title is from Thomas Moore's song "Oft in the stilly night" as there is always a sadness to those places that were once hives of activity and now provide rest only for the dead and the crows! Clondalkin with tassels on top!
Description: A visit to the Eason Collection today and a trip out the road to Clondalkin in a time long gone. The round tower dwarfs the chimney stack behind it while children are out and about with their guardians.
