Location: Rockhampton, Queensland.
Description: Collection reference: 29583, 76 Glass Magic Lantern Slides. Rockhampton is one of the oldest cities in Queensland and in Northern Australia. In 1853, Charles and William Archer discovered the Fitzroy River, which they named in honour of Sir Charles FitzRoy. The Archer brothers took up a run near Gracemere in 1855, and more settlers arrived soon after, enticed by the fertile valleys. The town of Rockhampton was proclaimed in 1858.

A. Reyrolle & Co. Ltd was founded by Alphonse Reyrolle (1864 - 1919), a French engineer who established a small switchgear shop in London in 1886. In 1901 his business moved to Hebburn and the firm began to grow with the recruitment of Henry Clothier. Clothier helped them develop large switchgears for power stations, a product the company became famous for.
Over the years, Reyrolle continued to grow, seeing a number of mergers. Most notably with C.A Parsons in 1968 and Rolls Royce in 1989. The Hebburn site is now owned by Siemens who acquired the company in 2005.
This photograph shows construction at A.Reyrolle & Co. Ltd in Hebburn on 28 March 1920.

Description: This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s William Hall collection. The Hall collection combines photographs from both William J Hall and his father William Frederick Hall. The images provide an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour, from the 1890s to the 1930s – from large racing and cruising yachts, to the many and varied skiffs jostling on the harbour, to the new phenomenon of motor boating in the early twentieth century. The collection also includes studio portraits and images of the many spectators and crowds who followed the sailing races.
The Australian National Maritime Museum undertakes research and accepts public comments that enhance the information we hold about images in our collection. If you can identify a person, vessel or landmark, write the details in the Comments box below.

Description: Continuing with the maritime theme of yesterday but this time way up north in the County of Donegal. The "Fort Aengus" is kitted out and made ready for her life as a fishing trawler. The Title on the image says that she is at sea with passengers but she is clearly still in the stocks and has not yet floated off. At that time Killybegs was the centre of an active boat building industry and the fishing fleet was expanding rapidly although the abuse of Irish fish stocks by foreign trawlers was ramping up. One of our great failures was to give away control of the fishing in Irish waters on our access to the EEC!

Description: The landing pier on the Great Blasket Island off the coast of Kerry gives a very clear indication of just how rough and rugged the land and the water could be in that place. When this photo was taken the principal means of accessing the islands was a boat similar to the "Náomhóg" that one can see on the left propped up on timbers. Morning Mary went to the Great Blasket a few years ago and the landing stage has changed but is readily recognisable from the image.

Description: At first glance this looks like an Alpine scene but that may be the POV chosen by Mr. French when taking this image of the convent in Portlaw? Definitely treading on the territory of Mr. Poole but he has managed to capture a sense of stillness and contemplation even if it was only for the camera! The grave in the centre of the lawn looks relatively recent which may or may not be an indicator of the date the photo was taken?

Description: A fine Imperial Plate of a pretty deserted Wellington Street in Ballymena, County Antrim seems to be rather a waste, unless you are an admirer of horse apples? The street is not entirely deserted. On the top left, a man is giving a demonstration of a stance very seldom seen nowadays. He has his hands across his back and inside his jacket, which I always believed came from the wearing of tails?

Description: When you can fill a gap in one fell swoop, why not take the opportunity? Mr. Sampson of Downpatrick, while building a drystone wall, pulled this rock out of the ground and filled a great big gap, saving him a whole lot of digging and lifting!! Description: As you can see from the photo and the title we have visited this location many times before BUT if Research Mary has chosen this one then there must be a good reason? One might be that the image is on an Imperial Plate which means that one can almost read Daniel O'Connell's thoughts. The other may have eluded this observer but one thing we can be sure of is that the Chime in the Slime is not there yet:-D

If you wish to find it on the map don't fall for a straightforward "Kilmurry" because Clare has a collection of them. Description: The Great and the Good gather at the graveside of the little man in the top hat with the gentle smile, as many of us will remember the late President Seán T. O'Kelly who died in 1966. Dignitaries of the church are there aplenty to honour a man whose commitment to the church was always evident. His political friends are present but I find it hard to identify any from the other parties but that might be a lack of knowledge of who might have been there. Searching through the crowd should make an interesting day?

Description: "BLANKETING MRS. O'NEILL" a strange image from the Mason Photographic Collection. A circle of Scottish soldiers in their traditional kilts, caubeens and tartan socks bouncing a naked lady on a blanket seems like great sport for the soldiers. The onlooking lady and gent likewise seem amused though the lady seems rather more preoccupied?
Given Mason's history of illustrated talks and presentations there must be a story behind the image?

Description: Damaged it may be but this Imperial plate from the Lawrence Collection shows so much of one of the most beautiful buildings in Dublin. I love all the hackneys making their way into John's Road and the main entrance. There are plenty of notices on the notice board for the observant observer to observe?

Description: A visit to the wonderful Mr. O'Dea's collection today and a deserted railway station at Ballywillan, County Longford. The track nearest the stations premises is in good nick whereas on the other side the sleepers are up, the rails are aside and it looks like it is curtains at least for the second line. I wonder was Ballywillan on the Dublin to Sligo line and if so is it still on the go?
Apology: I have egg on my face after yesterday completely misreading the title on the Hogan image from Cork:-(
GOOD NEWS KLAXON: Keep an eye out for this
programme featuring our very own Elinor Wiltshire and some of her photographs that we have featured here. It's on this Sunday evening, RTÉ One at 19:30. For those of you "out foreign", it'll be on the RTÉ Player...

Description: Normally Mr. O'Dea's domain but in this case it appears that Mr. French decided to get in on the act in advance. Cahirsiveen Railway Station is the caption but the image contains a whole lot more than that with two bridges, the hills behind and indeed a very bad job of Photoshopping!

Description: A magnificent memorial to a lady in Killarney Cemetery to end our week. The crucifix set in the archway is very impressive and the gravestone in the well tended plot would seem to suggest that the lady was much loved and deeply missed. I hope that it looks as well tended and cared for today?

Description: Westmoreland Street in Dublin hasn't changed that much since Mr. French took this photograph but the transport, the fashion, and the lighting has changed dramatically! Lots to see here and lots to speculate on, but a freshly baked virtual sticky bun with extra sticky for the first one to spot the origin of our title today!

Description: A peeler without a cap badge, the Guild Hall with works going on outside and men standing about gossiping like auld wans - what's going on here now? Derry's Guild Hall, that iconic building that has featured so much in recent years as seen from the quays. That peeler has a fine, well groomed beard which probably tells us that he is a senior man who knows all there is to be known about what is actually going on?

Description: No soft Homburg, and definitely no top hat for Mr De Valera today. Instead he has donned a fetching pair of dark sunglasses.
Now we don't know where or whose funeral this was, or if indeed, it was a funeral. Might it have been a commemorative event? Also, we'd love confirmation that Margaret Pearse and Tomás Derrig (Ó Deirg) are in this photo too? What band was this? Their insignia looks quite distinctive. And as usual, any and all other information will be gratefully received.

Description: What a lovely day to take a little visit to our West coast and to Mayo in particular. It is a part of the Island that is very popular from a tourism perspective. I believe it is on the Wild Atlantic Way which we have seen become more and a part of our tourism offering over the past 10 to 15 years.

Description: A very impressive monument indeed. Somebody obviously missed the late 1st Earl of Cork. I would presume the earldom of Cork was created many centuries ago. There is a lot of very fancy writing in Latin to be translated, I for one can't wait to read all about it.

Description: A lovely river scene from the Eason Collection to end the week with the title " Bridge near Kingstown, Co. Dublin"! I've had a look but haven't managed to see a bridge yet. Unless that is that this an "Irish Bridge"? Back in 1995 I was fortunate enough to spend several weeks in Israel/Palestine territory and while driving through the desert near the Dead Sea we passed several signs stating "Irish Bridge" and when I enquired what that was the response was a place where you might cross if the water was not too deep during floods!

Description: Laide Ancient Cross in Cushendall in County Antrim looks pristine and newly minted. The carving is so well developed and clear that one suspects that it may not be quite as ancient as the title suggests? Description: It is always interesting to see how a small fishing village where the original inhabitants once struggled to make a living and where conditions were brutally harsh can become a place for the wealthy and famous! Dalkey is on such and the spread of the socially mobile denizens of the city of Dublin along the coast has swallowed it up like a fungus. It brings out the cynic in this Mary!
Not quite the seafront in Bray but out there on the Southside as a reminder of the interment yesterday of the late singer, Sinead O'Connor.
