Assume she's Aida de Acosta Root (1884-1962), rather a fascinating character in her own right; she was married to Oren Root from 1908-1922: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aida_de_Acosta She's also here: [http://www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/3294667187/] And this is her sister RIta: [http://www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/3220580236/]

NYC Planner who died in 1994 at the age of 97. Was still actively involved in the City until the time of his death..I wonder what beach he was on..I assume somwhere on Long Island by the look of it.

See www.oldlongisland.com/2011/01/goodhue-livingston-pictured... for a use of this picture and indication that Goodhue Livingston (1867-1951), the architect, had a Southampton connection, building a house for his family there. The NYC planner was Goodhue Livingston, Jr. (1897-1994). Could this be an 18 yr old? Or is it more likely the father at 48?

I think this is the father, mostly from the context.
