In 1914, William C. Muschenheim, owner of the Hotel Astor in New York City, provided a function room and other amenities to the Santa Claus Association of New York. The hotel space, called the Santa Claus Cave, allowed hundreds of volunteers to sort, investigate and refer to charities thousands of letters sent to Santa Claus from poor children of New York. —The New York Times
