Rock Island lighthouse in Co. Cork is set in juxtaposition with a lady on an unlikely position in this image from the Commissioners of Irish Lights. The work appears to be going full tilt with scaffolding, framework and casings aplenty but how did the lady get down there on the rocks?

Photographer: Ball, Robert S. (Robert Stawell), 1840-1913

... Towards the west end of the peninsula is a terrace of houses built in 1907 as a coastguard station, now converted to private holiday accommodation; this replaced an earlier range of buildings erected in the early 19th century, when Crookhaven was a centre both for legitimate coastal shipping and for smuggling activity. ... From - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Island_(Ireland) I think it is Mary Poppins on the rocks; she breezed in with a change of the wind.

... Every year keepers had to paint the lantern inside and out, the gallery, gates, iron fences, gutters and downpipes, oil tanks and flagstaffs. The annual whitewashing, cleaning out of “ashpits, cesspools, etc” was to be carried out as soon as possible after the 1st of April. The cottage also had to be maintained in ship-shape condition as unannounced inspections were regular as well as the annual Commissioners’ inspection. The keepers were provided with an allowance of eight tons of Scotch coal or seven tons of English coal every year. The keeper here could have expected to earn 3 shillings per day in 1905. ... I'd be thinking the the lady should be destined for the Royal College of Surgeons, either to repair her bones or to put her under Bergin's microscope to see if she's been photoshopped! Although not clear to us there may be path which runs down the left of picture and even to the rocks below. In all events any woman living here would surely be confident of her way around.

Fastness Rock (Lighthouse) is a Townland or Street in the 1901 census, 3 gentlemen, no ladies. In 1911, 4 gentlemen, no ladies. This is the lighthose out at Fastnet Rock, the most southerly point in Ireland, not the one shown, but per wikipedia: Surrounding the lighthouse are nine cottages (built in the 1860s), once the property of Irish Lighthouses, now privately owned holiday cottages.[3] These were formerly the accommodation for the lighthouse keepers and their families of three local lighthouses: Crookhaven, Mizen Head and Fastnet Rock.

There are a couple of coastguard officers in Crookhaven in 1911. They are not living near the lighthouse, but on the far side of Crookhaven itself in Mallavoge townland. Charles Henry Pulman has a 34 year old wife Laura Kate. Patrick OHare's wife is Emma Kate, 32. Eugene Sullivan further west is an Assistant Keeper for Irish Lights, unmarried.

OK, so the Fastnet keeper in 1911 above, Robert Blakely, was married, and his wife is onshore on Rock Island, Goleen. In 1911 there are 63 residents. In 1901, 76 residents.
