The idea in this day and age of using a railway carriage as a vehicle for display of products and goods would sound like a Pink Elephant? Yet here we are a mere 55 years ago Bowater had a huge piece of rolling stock adapted and prepared to demonstrate their products to would be buyers. The distinctive nose of the VW Beetle poking out adds an additional element of travel to the image!

BCI 239 ? (I can't find my glasses!)
28 October 1968 was a Monday ...28 October 1967 was a Saturday ...ɹǝqɯoɔɥɔɐǝq
The internet is sometimes AMAZING! "beetle.ie - Ireland’s first ever census on classic Irish aircooled VWs" - beetle.ie/vehicle/bci-239/

https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia Incredible! The O'Dea shot is listed as Athy in the catalogue, that Beetle page says: It was parked at the side of a garage in Monastervin, County Kildare. in the mid 80s, 20 years later, just 20km up the road.

The Streetview shows that the layout at Athy is very simple now, just twin tracks straight through, but on the 25" it was more complex, with Cattle pens West of the line and track to the Goods shed at left/East. There was a section with buffers behind the surviving water tank. I think that is where the Bowater carriage was pictured, given the points in the foreground.

ACI 1 to ZCI 999 (Jul 1960 – Apr 1981) so BCI 239 being 1962 is very plausible.

Bowater not only had a coach, they had a whole light railway in Kent!

For anyone interested - the above find is a classic example of using inverted commas ("quotes") in a search engine, in this case with Google. BCI 239 vw search produced nothing very interseting or relevant. Insert the quotes and more specific results happen "BCI 239" vw . And luck is required!

Since it's in Athy then, there was a company called Bowaters Irish Board Mills located in Athy.

Streetview of the site of Bowaters mills, marked as Leinster Reinforcements on Google maps now. A half-assed google search suggests The company began trading on 8 April 2004

I've has a not particularly successful attempt at trying to identify the coach. It's a bogie coach with 8 wheels with gangway(s) at the end. It is a brake coach where the guard has lookout things on the coach side (I forget the rightful name for things). It's quite similar to no. 853, part of a group 851-856 built in 1902 for the Great Southern and Western Railway. these were gas lit on introduction. The IRRS or someone from it may have more details. If I find out anything in a few months time I'll post it then.

Niall McAuley I think Bowaters closed down in the mid 70s. Athy was once an industrial town but has suffered tremendous lob losses with the closures of Minch Norton (malt for Guinness), Tegral (originally asbestos roof products, then roof tiles), Coca Cola plant (concentrate) and of course Bowaters

that is amazing. We find a little bit of a Beetle and end up with the entire car. Flickroonies are just the bestest!
