Research Mary has gone all Imperial on us these days and we haven't had too many Clonbrocks to view and comment on so today we go down a little in the peerage to the Lords and Ladies of the Dillon household! A ruined castle surrounded by vegetation somewhere - but where? That is one of the beauties of their collection, it could be anywhere. From Connacht to the farthest reaches of Austria or Switzerland? Can we find it and is it still standing?

Gold star to [https://www.flickr.com/photos/184711311@N04] Saaleck is not a million miles from Eisenach. The consensus was that they were in Eisenach in July 1901 Eisenach Sheltering from the rain in the company of a ghost

https://www.flickr.com/photos/184711311@N04 Fantastic, well done again. I am wondering if you are going to drop the "Diesel" soon and move over to "HVO" to show a greener hue? I must say that "Suck HVO" does not roll of the tongue as easily as "Suck Diesel".

Not the site of the murder but the hideout of the assassins. And happened at Saaleck Castle not Rudelsburg. Saaleck Castle can be seen in the background of the 1905 postcard. Civil & Military Gazette (Lahore) - Friday 21 July 1922:

HERR RATHENAU'S MURDERERS. TRACKED TO SAALECK CASTLE. DR. STEIN ARRESTED. Through Reuter's Agency Berlin, July 18. —Details regarding the tracking of Herr Rathenau's murderers show that two tourists who arrived at Halle on Sunday reported that they saw a light on a turret of Saaleck Castle and believed that the assassins were there as the solitary tenants of the castle. The author Dr. Stein was absent. The police proceeded to the castle and demanded admission which the inmates refused. The police departed to obtain reinforcements. While the police were absent two men appeared on a balustrade of the castle, and greeted passers by with cheers for Eberhard the notorious leader in the Kapp Putsch. Eventually reinforcements arrived and forced an entrance, when they found that Fischer and Kern had shot themselves dead. Dr. and Mrs. Stein have been arrested. It is presumed that they knew of the presence of the murderers. Dr. Stein is an adherent of the German nationalist party and distinguished litterateur. It is stated that he denies all knowledge that the murderers had established themselves in the castle. The murderers communicated by telephone with Munich from whence assistance and money was despatched to the castle. The two men came from Munich, provided with false passports and clothing for two men.
Walter Rathenau was German Foreign Minister. He had been assassinated in Berlin.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walther_Rathenau?wprov=sfla1
