An overdose of cuteness and beautiful children on this Poole photo from 1920. Four girls and a handsome young man in the family portrait commissioned by Mr. JP Fogarty of Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny. The gentleman and lady have good reason to look proud. To my way of thinking the oldest girl has the makings of a real beauty!

My first thought that the Krazy Kataloger had got his initials and abbreviations mixed up, and that Mr Fogarty was a Justice of the Peace. My apologies to the KK for being suspicious, but there was in fact a Mr John P Fogarty JP who was chairman of Castlecomer Board of Guardians (Kilkenny Moderator - Saturday 03 June 1916)

Crikey! Kilkenny Moderator - Saturday 20 March 1915

DISASTROUS FIRE IN CASTLECOMER. PREMISES GUTTED. • At an early on Friday morning last a serious outbreak of fire occurred in the business establishment and residence of Mr. John P. Fogarty, .J.P.. M.C.C., Castlecomer. The signal of the outbreak having been given, the police and inhabitants of the town rushed to the scene of the conflagration, but the fire had got such a hold on the building, despite the united efforts of police and civilians, that the whole premises, including the 'entire stock-in-trade both in the drapery, grocery, and wine departments, as well as the furniture in the living rooms, were completely destroyed by the flames; fortunately no lives were lost. At great peril to himself Mr. Fogarty succeeded in rescuing Mrs. Fogarty and their little child from the burning building. The only means of escape was by the front first-floor window, as the ground floor was completely enveloped in flames, but with the assistance of a willing band of workers Mrs. Fogarty and her little one were safely rescued and were followed by Mr. Fogarty. ... Nothing now remains of the once splendid premises but a heap of desolate ruins, and universal sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Fogarty in their great misfortune.

Here is a John P. Fogarty of Castlecomer getting married in 1912. He is a grocer and draper. His new wife is a widow, Mary Fogarty (was Dowling). John P. is unmarried in the 1911 census, Mary is widowed. She has a daughter Philomena (5), who would be 14 in 1920, the eldest in this shot.

In 1901, John P. is living with brothers James and Edward. James, Hotel Proprietor, died in 1906, by which time he was married. Yes, here is James marrying Mary Dowling from Freshford in September 1901. So Philomena is half sister and first cousin to her younger siblings!

John Spooner Another from the Duchas schools collection "The real cause of the burning was not found out but the people said that it was the fire that caused it. ... (smart people?) "Mr. Fogarty was the name of the man who was living in the house." www.duchas.ie/en/src?q=Castlecomer&t=CbesTranscript&a... There's another recount of a shop fire in Moneenroe just below the Fogarty one but I don't know if it's the same fire.

What a lovely family! And the way the eldest girl has crossed her ankles with perfect poise says that she knows she can carry off any size of hairbow.

As the "a" on the catalogue number usually suggests, there is another shot in the archive, POOLEWP 2863, in which Cecilia looks more cheerful but little Mary does not hold still.
