Gerardo Machado y Morales (28 September 1869 – 29 March 1939) was a general of the Cuban War of Independence and President of Cuba from 1925 to 1933.

Shutan was military attache of the U.S. embassy in Havana. www.imdb.com/title/tt0031842/trivia/ says that a study guide for a 1939 film called The Real Glory about the Philippines in the Spanish-American War "pointed out that Col. William H. Shutan, who acted as the technical advisor, was the former military governor of the island of Mindinao, the location of the film's action."
