Two charming young ladies in their finery commissioned by Miss McCarthy, The Square, Waterford will brighten up the day for those fortunate enough to see them this morning. Their clothing is pristine, their flounces are many and the big eyes make them especially pretty and charming.

The next catalogue entry (dated 1903) is "Child commissioned by Miss K. McCarthy, Arundle Square, Waterford", and as the newspapers have loads of mentions of McCarthys at Arundel Square between 1900 and 1938, I suggest that the Krazy Kataloger has been a little lax in specifying the address. The McCarthys of Arundel Square through the ages (by newspaper mentions) were: 1900 Edward (2 stables to let) 1902 Mrs Catherine (sued for £30 for a set of scales. During the hearing she said they had been in Ireland since May 1901, previously in GB) 1903 Edward again, selling stuff 1918 Miss Mary, charged with not keeping records of meat transactions (pig offals) 1930 Mrs, requesting to have the pump removed from Milk Lane 1933 Mrs, objecting to the closure of Milk Lane 1935 Mrs, complaining that the rear of her premises were being used as a dumping ground 1938 Miss, A decision to by the County Borough to award her £25 (but no mention of why)

The 1911 census has Lizzie (10 years old) and Norah (5) McCarthy at Arundel Square, both nieces of Edward and Mary and also daughter Miss Kate (aged 27). That would make them 7 & 2-ish in the picture

These girls might have been too young to know what was going on, but they were up-to-date with the fashion ... "... Suffragette white was first donned en masse in June 1908 on Women’s Sunday, the first “monster meeting” hosted by the WSPU in London’s Hyde Park. The 30,000 participants were encouraged to wear white, accessorised with touches of purple and green. ..." From - theconversation.com/what-is-suffragette-white-the-colour-... 2 other things I noticed in the 1911 census - a big age difference (18 years) between Edward and Mary McCarthy, and also children born 10, children living 4. But it also says years married=38, which would mean Edward was 10 years old when he married, so I suspect the age given as 48 is incorrect.

www.flickr.com/photos/johnspooner/ "a big age difference (18 years) between Edward and Mary". Are ye living in a closet? My wife of 21+ years and I have a 26 years age difference. And, I know some fairly famous and well off folks who have 30 years or more. What's the big deal?

[https://www.flickr.com/photos/cassidyphotography] In Ireland a marriage where the wife is 18 years older would be so unusual at that time that I don't believe it at all, it must be an error. Looking at the original form pdf, I think that Edward is 68, not 48. Here is a marriage record for an Edward McCarthy and Mary Cullen in 1875, with Edward 2 years older than Mary. No - they are too old, would be 70+ in 1911.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley Surely sensitivity to age differences is inversely proportional to road frontage?

https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/ I’ve had a look at the original pdf and it looks more like 68 than 48. Compare with the ‘4’ in children living column which is a conventional, unambiguous, ‘4’. The ‘6’ of 68 is just sloppily written.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/ I think that marriage record is a good match. 2 years age difference when married, same as census if his correct age is 68. Marriage record would have them married 36 years against the 38 years of the census. It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen age discrepancies in the census returns before. People may have been more casual re their ages in those times, also numeracy wasn’t that high.

www.flickr.com/photos/johnspooner/ www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley/ I suppose I misread that Edward was 18 years younger than Mary. I am sure that would be incorrect and probably opposite. To be sure, I am older than my wife, though I have never thought about the age difference, much, except that she is damned cute. Some dimwits Down Under have made untoward comment about our age difference, but I simply consider they are from Brit or Scot convict heritage and simply trying appear holier than they are.
