A little bit of LIGHT relief now as we leave the Commissioners of Irish Lights behind for a while and we go over to the wonderful Poole Collection. The Hugganstown Hurling team look like a bunch of lads who could certainly play. With the exception of Elvis Presley's haircut they all look relaxed and ready to take on all comers. The lad with the suspenders would stand out in this day and age:-D

Hugganstown GAA were to merge with in 1928 in commemoration of the Battle of Carrickshock in December 1831. Carrickshock won the All-Ireland Inter Club Hurling Championships in 2017.

Just noticed the date of this photo was seemingly at the end of the year before the amalgamation in 1928, this piece seems to give some background to events in December 1927.

The "suspenders" remind me of the adverts for Threadgolds Thoroughgrip Garterettes which were a feature of the newspaper columns of Beachcomber (no relation?) and the radio and TV programs they inspired

A dustman was emptying dustbins In the heart of a horrible slum, Where no Viscount's white foot had e'er trodden And no Marquess would venture to come. How taut were the socks of that dustman Would show that he didn't forget The people's best friend in all troubles Threadgold's Thoroughgrip Garterette.

    * One obvious point in time and place for this photo would have been the Medal Final in 1927 when Hugginstown defeated Moincoin at Walsh Park, Waterford .... but that would likely have been held before December. * This could have been take in relation to the proposal to amalgamate Hugginstown and Knockmoylan to form Carrickshock which was in December 1927, and that might explain different kits being worn. I would be interested to know more about the monument erected outside Hugginstown in 1926 for £21 commemorating the loss of life of locals at the Battle of Carrickshock in the Tithe War which relates to the GAA club formation.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected] The monument was unveiled in 1925 according to a report in the Irish Weekly and Ulster Examiner on Saturday 20 June 1925:

"A decisive conflict in the great struggle which put an end to tithes took place at Carrickshock in the County Killkenny in the year 1831. In that historic little village has just been unveiled a monument to the men who fell in the engagement, and the ceremony of unveiling and blessing it was performed by the Very Rev Canon Treacy PP , Conahy, a nephew of James Treacy, one of the victims in the fight"

The Hugginstown Hurling Limerick There once was a young Carrickshocker Who didn't play tennis or soccer He hurled for the town With always a frown 'Cos the state of his socks was a shocker * * until a team-mate recommended Threadgolds Thoroughgrip Garterettes and turned his life around.
