Those of you of a certain age who grew up listening to the "wireless" will remember the statement, heard every Sunday afternoon
And now for the Hard Word and so the presenter, Paddy Crosbie would introduce the word of the week for some youngster to spell! In our case it is
Infirmorum and Morning Mary will have to admit that she never came across it before. As to today's image? The Mater Hospital in Belfast looking new and pristine but with some delightful posters, new and worn, to add some interest for the long sighted!

Saturday 25 August happened in 1894, 1900, 1906, 1917 etc. (but NOT in 1911 or 1912)

Are those pre-electric tram lines?

Matter Infirmorum, ‘Mother of the Sick’

Built from 1894-1900 per the DIA. Opened 23 Apr 1900. Very new here, I see lime leaching out of new bricks, and those posters are at an unfinished gate - only the plinths of the gateposts are there. Per [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia]'s dates, 1894 is too early, 1917 is after the Lawrence collections, so it has to be 1900 or 1906. I think the newness suggests 1900.

An article at Archiseek notes (and a closer reading of the DIA confirms) that the design was only decided after a competition in 1897, so it went up pretty quickly.

I see at the DIA that the architect, Fennell, submitted an unsuccessful design for the National Museum, Kildare street, in 1881.

Google satellite 3D is fun to play with - www.google.com/maps/@54.6080816,-5.9418399,31a,35y,59.09h... Q. What was across the road in 1900, 3+ storeys high, up which Mr French / Lawrence had his trusty tripod ?

Next shot in the catalogue L_CAB_07576 is of an 1898 Wolf Tone memorial in Dundalk. Paging back in the Royal catalogue, I hit L_ROY_02374 showing 1905+ tram wires - I am not inclined to think this one is that late. Paging forward, L_ROY_02377 also looks a bit later, lots of men in boaters at the Botanic Gardens. Hmm. The imperial catalogue jumps around a lot as they are mostly single shots, not sets or even pairs.

I was born in the Mater Infirmorum Hospital. Behind the trees to the left was later built the Extern which was the equivalent of A&E. The red brick building in Beachcombers photo during the 1960s served as the Nurses Home with the Mater Maternity Unit across the road. Behind the photographer was St. John's Nursing Home which was a place for convalescence. It is located on the Crumlin Road, Belfast next to the prison.

Note the wooden setts each side of the tram tracks. These were used to reduce noise in general, particularly outside hospitals

The Bundoran excursion seems to have been organised by the order of the ‘Ancient Free Gardeners’, a friendly society. Their name appears at the top of the poster jvc.oup.com/2021/02/11/the-brotherhood-of-free-gardeners/ [https://flic.kr/p/9sFEes]
