A really charming image of a sunny day on this wet and windy morning to cheer us all up - that is apart from the Beachcomber - who can only wish for one:-) The village pump in Gorey is the tittle and no doubt the pump is in there but look at all that is on the street? Cars, petrol pump, people just standing and sitting about, a motorcycle and a petrol pump!

It's a bit close to the sea for Gorey. Other ones labelled Gorey have been Courtown.

Wexford car reg: MI 1 to MI 9999 (Jan 1904 – Jan 1952); I think I see MI 4905, which would be at least 1/2 way through, 1930?

Definitely 1926 or later. That’s when Esso became a brand name in the US. It didn’t reach the UK until 1934. But when did it come to Ireland? Does anyone know? www.exxonmobil.co.uk/company/overview/about-us/history-of...

Getty have a Monkey Morgan shot from 1958 showing that the "pump house" (per the 6" cassini) in the middle of the junction was gone by then.

Mighty photo. Thanks.

I’ve done a search in the Irish Newspaper Archive. There’s an ad in the Fermanagh Herald on 6th April 1935 announcing “PRATTS NOW BECOMES ESSO” stating that the name ESSO was being adopted “in all countries”. Then in October 1935 there’s a rash of similar adverts in papers throughout the Republic, suggesting perhaps that the rebrand might have been a little later south of the border? In any event, there are no ads for Esso in Irish papers before 1935 that I can find.

One of the signs on the buildings is for "Bolger's Hotel and Restaurant" if that helps with dating.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/ Looking in the newspaper archives, I see mention of Bolger’s Hotel, Courtown from 1928 onwards until 1964. From about 1939 it was sometimes called Bolger’s Marine Hotel.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/ The ITA’s ‘Irish Travel’ magazine of July 1942 lists the following COURTOWN HARBOUR (Wexlord). BAY VIEW; B. 10; Day 14/-; Week 70:- to RO/-. BOLGER'S MARINE; B. 22; Bed and BIt. 7:-. COURTOWN; B. 7; Week 63/-. LEVUKA GUEST HOUSE; B. 11; Day 12/6 to 14/6; Week 70/- to 80/-. Couldn’t find any earlier copies which would date the ‘Marine’ name change 20 bedrooms with B&B 7/-, under £13 in today’s money, could that be right?

https://www.flickr.com/photos/bernardhealy Esso was the brand name of Standard Oil of New Jersey which later rebranded as Exxon in the USA but kept the Esso name abroad, including in Canada, much longer (still?) Around the turn of the millennium they (re)merged to form ExxonMobil, the latter being Standard Oil of New York's main brand name since the 1920s. Most of the former Standard Oil companies operate exactly one "Standard"-branded gas station in every state and foreign territory they have the right to, to prevent the trademark from lapsing, but have adopted the names they first coined when expanding outside the territory they were assigned when broken up over 100 years ago as their main brands.
