Staying beside the seaside though further up the east coast at Bangor in County Down. Prince Town Road, Bangor to be precise with lines of houses and the most impressive strings of wires strung on poles. Were they electricity or telephone? The man in the straw boater in the foreground is holding a very impressive two wheeled mode of transportation.

Gentleman with the boater has a motorcycle, EI-15, a Sligo reg, so certainly after registrations introduced in 1903. In the 1914-15 directory at lennonwylie dot co dot uk, it is registered to a Wm Ferguson, Manor Street, Belfast.

yes I think it's a radio receiver mast, I have been looking through lots of photos of early 20th motorbikes, as yet I cannot identify the make of this one. I cannot decipher the name on the tank

There are a couple of William Fergusons in Bangor area who might be the motorcycle owner in the 1911 census. To me at least, he looks rather young, so I like: this William Ferguson on Ward Avenue, less than a mile from here as the crow flies when he's sober. That Wm Ferguson is 17 and a Bank Clerk.

I wonder were all those wires heading up the road to the cross channel cable station at Donaghadee. There are no other big towns east of Bangor to warrant so many wires otherwise. atlantic-cable.com/Cables/Anglo-Irish/index.htm

https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected] Could just be the whole town of Bangor connecting back to Belfast? I only count 58 insulators on the pole. I count 30 Bangor numbers in the 1913 directory.

In 1911, EI-15 is owned by James G. Thompson, Donegall Quay Mills, Belfast.
