This is described as a monastic building in the catalogue but looks more like a fortified residence to this untrained eye. The STP is by far my favourite collection and this fine example with the three wasters chatting on the graves is a particularly fine example. The title is from Thomas Moore's song "Oft in the stilly night" as there is always a sadness to those places that were once hives of activity and now provide rest only for the dead and the crows!
