There are few better ways of narrowing a Lawrence date range than being able to view a good well positioned poster. In fact, if I could talk to the young Robert French, I would tell him to include as many posters and especially newspaper headline posters in his photos as possible.

We had one that looked just like this before but it was Galway, I think. These chaps do like their church corners.

Extraordinary perspectives! I think it is 07:40 by the church clock. There is another photo with a couple of characters at 07:45, five minutes later - catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000318796

https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia The poster is much clearer on the second image - it appears to advertise a replay between Wexford and Dublin to be played in Kilkenny on Sunday June 12th, 1904

There's a huge amount in the press about this tie (Leinster CupI totally misread (as both semi-finals ended level I got my replays mixed up) The original Leinster cup final final was played in early May, but was abandoned (with Dublin in the lead) due to crowd trouble. Eventually it was decided to replay the match, and after 'the Carlow fiasco' most parties wanted to play elsewhere. Eventually after several newspaper columns of debate Kilkenny was decided on, and after Dublin had unsuccessfully appealed because they thought they should have been awarded the cup without a replay, Dublin won the replay when it was eventually played in June.semi-final). The original drawn match was in March, with the replay due to be played at Carlow in Mayon April 17th. For some reason this replay (and special trains) was cancelled. There are huge accounts running into several columns detailing the deliberations of the governing body. Dublin won the actual replay when they got round to playing it on June 12th.DannyM8

We came across Somers & Porter before, ([https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] Thanks for the note) in this Poole photo from years ago that could still do with a little more work. www.flickr.com/photos/nlireland/7438808414/ Is the same cart in both photos?

https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia Good point about Sunday morning. How far in advance would matches have been advertised? Perhaps this was taken the morning of the match? Word of the photographer's presence got around quickly judging by the appearance of the two people by 7.45.

The Market Square is triangular; and the nearby Bull Ring is square. Blame the Vikings!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia you are confusing me.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia not sure it was really called Market Square, both old and new maps called it The Cornmarket. It seems an unlikely place to hold a market as the ground has a pronounced incline.

Also, the actual market is 50 yards down the hill on the other side of the bull ring. These days, based on the street name plates, it appears to be called either crimewatch or rath. goo.gl/maps/nAojc8CMJSPSw7WbA. Get your act together, Wexford CoCo!
