This very formal carte-de-visite of the Earl of Mayo is our offering to start the week. I do not believe we have come across him before. The catalogue informs us he was Viceroy of India, what more can you tell us about this interesting man.
As I am writing this there is a report on the Tokyo Olympics running in the background, I see that "Skateboarding" is now an Olympic sport. I suspect parents around the world are getting some interesting feedback from their skateboarding obsessed children about their many "you are only wasting your time warnings".

"Lord Mayo was stoutly built, with a frank, good-looking face, upon which a smile generally was to be found" - from his obituary following his assassination at Port Blair on the Andaman Islands in 1872. The photograph doesn't seem to have captured his smile.

From Wikipedia, it looks like the Bourne & Shepherd name only started being used in 1866.

He didn't become Viceroy of India until 1868 and didn't arrive in India until January 1869 - I doubt he would have used Bourne and Shepherd's services before that. Advert from Times of India - Thursday 20 March 1884.
No mention of a movable boudoir.

I've been to Port Blair! The four-person gallows there is the most chilling sight I've ever seen.

There's a biography here: gutenberg.org/files/35809/35809-h/35809-h.htm Alas, no mention of him having a sitting at Bourne and Shepherd's studio. On the title page is a portrait which at first glance appears to be the same as today's carte de visite, but there are some subtle differences (such as the ties holding the cloak partly obscuring a button on one but not the other, and the loop above his belt being slightly lower). But similar enough that I reckon it was taken at the same sitting. Spot the differences competition
