    Those "stand off pies" are probably detonators, to create an explosion just above ground . . .

    Exactly, so called "Dinortstäbe" (Dinort rods, after their inventor) on German 50 kg bombs. The rods made the bombs explode above ground to increase fragmentation for anti-personnel use. Nasty!
