Where there's a Will there's a ROW?? The last will and testament of Hannah Sheppard was an unusual commission for the Poole studio, so today we can see it in all its glory! Apparently witnessed by Constable Lambert, it is a great example of cursive writing that is so seldom seen these days. What can we find out about the lady, the Constable, and/or the document??

Hannah S Lambert of Tramore write a letter to the Waterford Chronicle on May 25th 1907. The subject was the Seahorse memorial (the Seahorse being a ship which had foundered). Also from the letter we learn that her mother was a native of Waterford, lived for a number of years near Dunmore East, and spent a great deal of her youth at Tramore.

A Mrs Hannah Lambert was a defendant in a court case over a disputed Will (her brother's who was a Wexford farmer) in 1908. Perhaps (if it's the same Mrs. Hannah Lambert) she wanted to avoid her own will being disputed by not only writing it clearly but also by getting Poole to make a copy/copies. (Dublin Daily Express - Thursday 19 November 1908)

Confusingly, she was Hannah Sheppard Constable before she married Constable William Lambert in 1897.

Susan Stanford doesn't seem to be a close relative of Hannah Lambert from what I can see. she was the daughter of Thomas Jackson and Lucinda Graham, while Hannah was a Constable. (She may still be a cousin of some kind.) Incidentally, William Stanford is officially Bedell Stanford..

Record of Hannah's death in December 1925 says she was 79, and survived by her husband (we see in the census that he was the younger of the two).

Presumably the photograph was used (successfully, it seems) as evidence in this court case (Waterford Standard - Saturday 31 August 1929) Waterford Standard - Saturday 31 August 1929

I hope there was a photo/page 2; otherwise an un-witnessed Will would surely be contestable. (Not to mention the rather worrying signature).

£26 per annum in 1921 is not a lot of money nowadays - about £1,160. (1,350 Euros) Via - www.measuringworth.com/calculators/ukcompare/result.php?y...
