George Westwood was born in 1873 in Handsworth, Staffordshire, the son of James and Selina Westwood. At the age of 20 he enlisted in the regular army, serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment for 21 years. For the first three years of his service he was stationed in England, followed by eleven and a half years in India, after which he returned to England for a further 7 years. Having completed his 21 years of service, he was discharged in April 1914.
At the outbreak of war George was serving with the 6th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment having re-enlisted when the Battalion was formed in Beverley on 27 August 1914. The Battalion embarked for Gallipoli on 1 July 1915, and landed at Suvla Bay on 7 August 1915. George was killed the 9 August 1915, aged 43. He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Helles Memorial at Gallipoli, Canakkale, Turkey.
