Cyril Stamford Ireland was born in Lockington in 1892. He was one of four children of Charles and Emily Ireland.
He enlisted with the Royal Field Artillery serving as a gunner with No 1 Depot and was a Farrier Corporal. Cyril did not serve in France as he sadly died on 5 March 1916 in the Northern General Hospital in Newcastle of acute pneumonia as a result of Spanish flu. Cyril was buried at St Mary’s Church, Lockington on 8 March 1916.
