Mr John Henry Foley. I have heard that name before. In fact, we have come across some of his creations as we have travelled around the country. Obviously we want to know all there is to know about him, his life, and his career. We would especially like to hear about what drew him to London.
You see the comments
“Flickr is sometimes amazing” and
“National Library of Ireland on the Commons Is Always Amazing” on this stream from time to time. Today we put these comments to the test – your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find and link to an image of each and every Foley creation. We might even raid the
Virtual Sticky Bun Box for very creative comments and links.

I will start you off with a link to Burke outside Trinity College, Dublin, I see a comment that it was erected by Foley in 1868 [https://www.flickr.com/photos/nlireland/8664450269] NOTE - If you'd like to include a Flickr photo or video in your comment, simply copy and paste its URL between square brackets, like so: [URL] Full details here - Using HTML on Flickr I think I will award myself a Bun! He'd been based in London for 18 years by then after entering the Royal Academy, according to his Wikipedia page and was about to get his biggest London commission, for the Albert memorial, starting with the figure groups representing the continents and then later Albert himself. No dogs, I'm afraid, but here's a friendly looking elephant from his Asia group. :-) https://www.flickr.com/photos/eregis/29821002623/in/photolist-Mrbr8D-XWuyZU-2iyUoW6-qCpWqS-2hDVT4B-27xne47-8WKN4b-21UdWvy-czbVUu-TittWh-2iEUADR-t1QXfR-nvQzVQ-8HXkco-ekR7iw-23iSPp1-8HXkK3-81t52n-4qBRPN-2a6jjTk-qCtMs6-qm4Cap-5iP8HX-2idEoTP-iHuisG-2iGCoUS-9x9aBX-8WGKVe-8WKNY9-8WGLCe-2iLe2Bf-NqaNVq-TJEgeb-GxAojq-MCuvFK-rsF499-rqW89e-ZpqVsv-rGY3wC-CuahPp-tUgJ1e-ucmE5U-5KxBYx-2591sXX-2ib6muZ-LQMxnz-yvvJDs-q1fvRk-qm4BuX-iHsMjt

A copy of a similar photo (minus the handwriting) is in the National Portrait Gallery in London. It was taken for a book entitled "Portraits of Men of Eminence in Literature, Science and Art" Vol. 1. There’s a potted biography along with the photo. Here’s his Prince Albert in Dublin: [https://www.flickr.com/photos/nlireland/26792457164]

The Irish Times had a nice article about Foley on the 200th anniversary of his birth. Foley Street in Dublin was named after him. [https://www.flickr.com/photos/nlireland] It is interesting how unnoticed Prince Albert is, considering he’s right beside the Natural History Museum.

One of two Foley statues in the Phoenix Park which met an explosive end. The other was of George Howard. I think that the plinth may have survived. catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000040835 catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000565287 A little on the bawdy side, but couldn't resist: THE BALLAD OF GOUGH There are strange things done from twelve to one In the Hollow at Phaynix Park, There's maidens mobbed and gentlemen robbed In the bushes after dark; But the strangest of all within human recall Concerns the statue of Gough, 'twas a terrible fact, and a most wicked act, For his bollix they tried to blow off! 'Neath the horse's big prick a dynamite stick Some gallant 'hayro' did place, For the cause of our land, with a match in his hand Bravely the foe he did face; Then without showing fear - and standing well clear - He expected to blow up the pair But he nearly went crackers, all he got was the knackers And he made the poor stallion a mare! For this is the way our 'hayroes' today Are challenging England's might, With a stab in the back and a midnight attack On a statue that can't even shite! -Vincent Caprani 1934- PS, can somebody fix that picture?
