In 1872 Miss Amy Sheridan's performance of Lady Godiva by W. M. Akhurst for Astley's circus created a furor among the respectable society when she appeared as Lady Godiva dressed in what for the time was deemed virtually nothing.
Described as "a sight to drive the mosquitoes mad" photographs of the Amy were deemed pornographic by many but still sold in large numbers in Australia.
